MASS INSECT DIE-OFF: HONEYBEE APOCALYPSE - Up to 12 Million Bees Found Mysteriously Dead and Dying in the State of Florida?!

Two days ago, I told you of Beekeeper Charles Smith of Fellsmere in Florida, who found mounds of dead bees mysteriously spilling out of his 400 hives. Today, the following report from the Dialy Mail, indicates that the die-off is escalating, with no apparent reason as to the cause.

Honeybee carcasses coated the ground around hundreds of Florida beehives after a mysterious massacre claimed millions of bees and mutilated a way of life for local bee keepers. Experts have ruled out 'colony collapse disorder' and the bee keepers suspect that their bees were poisoned with pesticide. Florida agriculture officials and the local sheriff's office are both investigating. No one can tell yet what killed as many as 12 million bees from 800 hives this week in Brevard County, on central Florida's Atlantic coast. The massive bee die-off has stung Charles Smith, whose Smith Family Honey Company lost $150,000 worth of bees. 'I'm a pretty tough guy but it is heart wrenching,' he told News 13 in Orlando. 'Not only is it a monetary loss here, but we work really hard on these bees to keep them in good health.'

Smith scooped up handfuls of dead bees that littered the ground around his hives. The bees he raises go to farmers around the country to pollinate numerous crops, he said.  The bee deaths show the tell-tale signs of pesticide poising, experts said. State officials are testing dead bees to determine exactly what killed them. The Brevard County Sheriff's Office is investigating the deaths, which spanned 30 sites in a mile-and-a-half radius, as a possible crime. 'The fact that it was so widespread and so rapid, I think you can pretty much rule out disease,' Bill Kern, a University of Florida entomologist, told Florida Today. 'It happened essentially almost in one day. Usually diseases affect adults or the brood, you don’t have something that kills them both.' So-called 'colony collapse disorder' has killed bees in millions of hives around the world, but the effects of that disease are more gradual and the bees typically leave the hive before they die, Kern said. County officials sprayed mosquito-killing pesticide from the air last week, though they said the poison dissipates quickly and should not have harmed the bees. 'I'll never get completely compensated for this unless someone handed me 400 beehives,' Smith told Treasure Coast Newspapers. 'I lost the bees, the ability to make honey and the ability to sell the bees.'  - Daily Mail.

GLOBAL VOLCANISM: Mount Anak Krakatau Alert - All Fishermen And Tourists Told to Stay Clear of Indonesia’s "Child of Krakatoa" Volcano!

Several days ago, I told you that the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), had raised the alert level status for the Mount Anak Krakatau volcanic island to a "standby" or level IV.  Now, authorities are warning tourists and fishermen to stay more than a mile (two kilometers) from the smoking Indonesian volcano known as “Child of Krakatoa.”

The volcano in the Sunda Strait, 80 miles (130 kilometers) west of the capital, Jakarta, was created by the same tectonic forces that led to the 1883 Krakatoa eruption that killed tens of thousands of people. Its “child,” growing five yards (meters) a year, is now 1,320 feet (400 meters) tall and popular among hikers. Gede Suantika of the Center for Volcanology says the mountain’s alert level was raised to the second-highest level last week after the number of volcanic tremors soared from 200 a day to 7,200. Suantika said Tuesday that he worries a powerful burst could shoot incandescent rocks down its slopes and far into the ocean. - Washington Post.

MONUMENTAL EARTH CHANGES: Researchers Report Finds Shocking, Unprecedented And Massive Ozone Loss in the Arctic Atmosphere?!

The high atmosphere over the Arctic lost an unprecedented amount of its protective ozone earlier this year, so much that conditions echoed the infamous ozone hole that forms annually over the opposite side of the planet, the Antarctic, scientists say.

NASA's Cryosphere Program Manager, Tom Wagner, shared his perspectives on the ice with television audiences across the country. On the top of the world, a pulsing, shifting body of ice has profound effects on the weather and climate of the rest of the planet. Every winter as temperatures dip, sea ice freezes out of cold Arctic Ocean waters, and every summer the extent of that ice shrinks as warm ocean temperatures eat it away. Ice cover throughout the year can affect polar ecosystems, world-wide ocean currents, and even the heat budget of the Earth.

During the last 30 years we've been monitoring the ice with satellites, there has been a consistent downward trend, with less and less ice making it through the summer. The thickness of that ice has also diminished. In 2011 Arctic sea ice extent was its second smallest on record, opening up the fabled Northwest Passages and setting the stage for more years like this in the future. In this video, NASA's Cryosphere Program Manager, Tom Wagner, shares his perspectives on the 2011 sea ice minimum.
