PLANETARY TREMORS: East Siberia Quake to Trigger New Series of Tremors - Scientist!

The 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the Tyva republic in Russia's East Siberia on Sunday will trigger a new series of earthquakes in the region, a Russian scientist said.

Crack in apartment in Kyzyl.
"Judging from the data received from our stations, this is not the continuation of the Tyva earthquake that occurred in late 2011 with its epicenter at the Academician Obruchev Ridge but signals a new series of earthquakes," said Viktor Seleznyov, director of the Geophysical Institute at the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The earthquake, the second powerful tremor in East Siberia in the past two months, had its epicenter located 107 km (66 miles) east of the city of Kyzyl near the border with Mongolia, at a depth of 15 km. The earthquake struck at 10:20 a.m. Moscow time (06:20 GMT) with a magnitude of 6 to 7 points in the epicenter.

The earthquake caused no casualties or damage, according to preliminary data reported by the Russian Emergencies Ministry. The previous earthquake with a 6.7 magnitude occurred in December 2011 in the Kaa-Khemsky district of Tyva, some 100 km east of the city of Kyzyl, at a depth of 10 km. The tremor caused no destruction or casualties. The next earthquake was expected to strike closer to Lake Baikal. Normally, a fault that becomes active in one area causes a series of decreasing tremors by their magnitude, he said. "In this case, it is most likely that some neighboring fault became active near the previous one. This means that Tyva will now be rattled by two series of earthquakes simultaneously," he said. - RIA Novosti.

GLOBAL VOLCANISM: The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report - New Activities and Unrest!

The following constitutes the new activity and unrest report from the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report, a cooperative project between the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program and the US Geological Survey's Volcano Hazards Program.

SOLAR WATCH: Tangled Magnetic Fields Erupts on the Sun, Producing a Solar Tsunami - Possible Earth-Bound Component! UPDATE: Strongest Radiation Storm Since 2005 Hits Mars as 400,000 km Wide "Canyon of Fire" is Created From the Magnetic Filament! UPDATE: Incoming Coronal Mass Ejection! UPDATE: Important Earthquake Watch as CME Targets Earth and Mars!

According to NASA, a new sunspot is emerging at the circled location and a solar wind stream flowing from a coronal hole should reach Earth on February 25-26.

SOLAR TSUNAMI: Tangled magnetic fields on the sun's NW limb erupted today, February 23th, producing a solar tsunami. You can see the shadowy yet powerful wave rippling away from the blast site in this move from the Solar Dynamics Observatory. The wave is subtle. If you didn't see it the first time, watch the movie again and look for regions on the solar surface that light up as the wave passes by. The nearly transparent ripple of plasma and magnetism was probably ~100,000 km high and, racing outward at a typical speed of 250 km/s, packed as much energy as 2.4 million megatons of TNT (1029 ergs). On the scale of the sun, it doesn't look like much, but you wouldn't want to run into one on Earth. - Space Weather.
WATCH: Filament Eruption/Solar Tsunami/CME

CORONAL MASS EJECTION Part II and III: A pair of explosions can be viewed in the latest STEREO Behind COR2 images. The latest events was most likely the result of a prominence / filament eruption. This first blast appears to be headed north and is not Earth directed. The second event may be Earth directed, however more images will be needed to confirm this. - Solar Ham.

WATCH: Massive Filament Eruption (Hyder Flare).

UPDATE: Incoming Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) and Strongest Radiation Storm Since 2005 Hits Mars as 400,000 km Wide "Canyon of Fire" is Created From the Magnetic Filament!
RADIATION STORM HITS MARS ROVER: En route to the red Planet, Mars rover Curiosity has experienced the strongest solar radiation storm since 2005. The rover is okay. Researchers say this is a normal part of Curiosity's job as 'stunt double' for human astronauts. [full story] [video]

A magnetic filament snaking over the sun's northeastern limb rose up and erupted during the early hours of Feb. 24th. The eruption split the sun's atmosphere creating a "canyon of fire," shown HERE in a movie captured by the Solar Dynamics Observatory. The glowing walls of the canyon are formed in a process closely related to that of arcade loops, which appear after many solar flares. Stretching more than 400,000 km from end to end, the structure traces the original channel where the filament was suspended by magnetic forces above the stellar surface. As erupting magnetic filaments often do, this one launched a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. The Solar and Heliospheric Observary recorded the expanding cloud: movie. The CME does not appear to be heading for Earth or any other planet.
- Space Weather.
WATCH: Filament Channel Eruption and Coronal Mass Ejection.

INCOMING CME: Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab say a coronal mass ejection (CME) will hit Earth's magnetic field on Feb. 26th at 13:30 UT (+/- 7 hr). The impact could spark a G2-class geomagnetic storm. Aurora alerts: text, voice. - Space Weather.
UPDATE: Important Earthquake Watch as Coronal Mass Ejection Targets Earth and Mars.
CME TARGETS EARTH, MARS: A coronal mass ejection (CME) launched from the sun on Feb. 24th appears set to hit both Earth and Mars. According to analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab, the cloud should reach Earth today, Feb. 26th around 1330 UT, followed by Mars two days later. Click to view the CME's animated forecast track:

The cloud's impact could spark a G2-class geomagnetic storm, so high latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras. Aurora alerts: text, voice. If the forecast is correct, the CME could also hit NASA's Mars rover Curiosity on Feb. 27th. The rover, en route to the red planet onboard the Mars Science Lab spacecraft, is equipped with a radiation sensor that could detect energetic particles accelerated by the CME's passage. Indeed, this has happened before. The CME was hurled into space by a filament of magnetism, which rose up from the sun's northestern limb and erupted on Feb. 24th: SDO movie. Although much of the cloud headed north, out of the plane of the planets, the cloud's lower edge will dip down low enough to intersect Earth, Curiosity, and Mars.

DOOMSDAY 2012 & THE AGE OF OBAMA: End of America - Wyoming Doomsday Bill Advances in State House; Plans to Start Own Government and Military in Case the United States Collapses?!

Wyoming lawmakers pushed forward legislation to explore how the state would respond if the country fell into economic and political turmoil.

The so-called doomsday bill, passed in the Wyoming House on Friday, would create a special task force to study ways the state would handle such crises as a food shortage to a government shutdown. Some provisions that will be explored include Wyoming forming its own army and issuing its own currency. The task force formed by the bill would include state lawmakers, the head of Wyoming's Department of Homeland Security and the state attorney general. The bill must pass two more House votes before it reaches the Senate, according to the Casper Star-Tribune. So far, no word if the task force will explore solutions for a Zombie Apocalypse, as the Center For Disease Control has done. - Huffington Post.

With many thinking that America is tittering on the edge of Financial Armageddon,  State representatives in Wyoming  are advancing legislation to look into the feasibility of creating their own mini country in case the United States Collapses.  They are trying to figure out what Wyoming would do in the event of a complete economic or political collapse in the United States. House Bill 85 passed by a voice vote on Friday. The Bill will allow for a state-run government continuity task force. The Task force will be responsible for figuring out how Wyoming would handle this doomsday scenario.  The task force will look into issues such as; disruptions in food and energy supplies, an economic collapse and even a total meltdown of the federal government.
Lawmakers are so serious about this legislation that they are looking into the possibility of everything from Wyoming issuing its own alternative currency, to implementing a military draft. The Task force is even looking into how they could acquire a strike aircraft and an aircraft carrier.

The bill’s sponsor, state Rep. David Miller, R-Riverton, said with the national debt exceeding $15 trillion and protest movements growing around the country the State needs to make sure it’s protected should any unexpected emergency hit the U.S.
The bill has to pass another House Vote and then make it’s way through the State Senate for approval, but when you start seeing States adopting this type of legislation you know it’s time to start taking this serious! - Off Grid Survival.

RATTLE & HUM: "The Sounds of the Apocalypse" - Mysterious Night Time Noise Plagues Derry?!

People in Derry are being plagued by a mysterious noise coming from the air, it has been claimed.

SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey says scores of people are being kept awake by unexplained activity in the night sky - and the noise it creates. He says if it is caused by police or military activity then the authorities must offer an explanation. “I have received a number of calls from concerned residents who have been unsettled and whose sleeping pattern is being affected by what can only be described as a relentless and disturbing buzzing noise in the Derry sky over recent days,” he says.

“There has been an issue regarding the use of the PSNI Helicopter that has been frequently deployed which has caused annoyance, and I have been in contact with the Police Air Support Unit to ascertain some information in respect of the deployment of the helicopter. “That having been said, the helicopter has not been visible in recent days when this noise has been reported, and is obviously operating at a high altitude.

“If the PSNI confirm they are not responsible for the noise, then it is only logical, given enquiries that I have carried out, that the British Army are responsible for the operation of whatever device is causing grief to my constituents. I intend to write to the Secretary of State to confirm if this is indeed the case, as the presence of the noise is causing considerable anxiety.” He added:”We need answers to these important questions and I do intend to continue to pursue statutory agencies to find out who is responsible.” - Derry Journal.

MASS ANIMAL DIE-OFF: "A Potential Catastrophe" - Mysterious and Incurable Virus Kills Thousands of Lambs on Many British Farms?!

Thousands of lambs have been killed by a new virus that is threatening the survival of many British farms. The Schmallenberg virus causes lambs to be born dead or with serious deformities such as fused limbs and twisted necks, which mean they cannot survive.

The worst affected counties are Norfolk, Suffolk, East Sussex and Kent, but the
virus has spread all along the south coast to Cornwall.
Scientists are urgently trying to find out how the disease, which also affects cattle, spreads and how to fight it, as the number of farms affected increases by the day. So far, 74 farms across southern and eastern England have been hit by the virus, which arrived in this country in January. A thousand farms in Europe have reported cases since the first signs of the virus were seen in the German town of Schmallenberg last summer. The National Farmers Union has called it a potential “catastrophe” and warned farmers to be vigilant. “This is a ticking time bomb,” said Alastair Mackintosh, of the NFU. “We don’t yet know the extent of the disease. We only find out the damage when sheep and cows give birth, and by then it’s too late.” It is unclear exactly how the disease arrived in Britain, but the leading theory is that midges carried the virus across the Channel or North Sea in the autumn. However, scientists cannot yet rule out transmission of the disease from animal to animal.

Infected ewes do not show any symptoms of the virus until they give birth, with horrific results. Farmers have described delivering the deformed and stillborn animals as heartbreaking. The lambing season has only just begun, which means that the full impact of the disease will not be felt until the weather warms up and millions more animals are born. On the Continent, some farms have lost half of their lambs. So far the worst hit in Britain have lost 20 per cent, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Approximately 16 million lambs are born in Britain every year and sell at market for about £100 each. The effect of the disease on farms that are already struggling in the downturn could be severe. “For any business to lose 20 per cent of your stock would be a huge blow,” said Mr Mackintosh. “For a farmer to lose 20 per cent of your flock is catastrophic. If it was 50 per cent you would be put out of action. “I was talking to one who has 10,000 sheep. If he loses even five per cent of the animals born this year, that’s a hell of a lot of lambs. I know another who says 10 per cent of his ewes have become barren. He has 6,000 ewes, so that is 600 animals producing nothing.”... The worst affected counties are Norfolk, Suffolk, East Sussex and Kent, but the virus has spread all along the south coast to Cornwall. Farmers fear the disease may spread to larger flocks in the north of England, Wales and Scotland. In Europe, Germany, Holland and France have suffered worst, while recent cases have been reported in Italy and Luxembourg. - Telegraph.

WORLD WAR III: The Korean Nightmare and the Countdown to Armageddon - North Korea's Kim Jung Un Vows to Launch "Sacred War" Over U.S.-South Korea Naval Exercises!

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un threatened to launch a powerful retaliatory strike against South Korea if provoked, state media said Sunday, a day before the start of annual South Korean-U.S. military drills that Pyongyang calls an invasion rehearsal.

The North's National Defence Commission (NDC) described the exercise as "unpardonable war hysteria" and said its army and people would "foil" the US and South Korean moves with "a sacred war of our own style". The threat is the latest instance of Pyongyang taking a hostile tone towards Seoul since Kim Jong-un, the youngest son of the late leader Kim Jong-il, took over following the death of his father in December. Last week the North vowed "merciless retaliatory strikes" if any shells landed in waters claimed by Pyongyang during a live-fire artillery exercise near the disputed Yellow Sea border. But in the event it took no military action in response to the drill. The United States and South Korea are to mount two major annual joint military exercises, one in the coming week and the other in March.

Key Resolve, a computerised command post exercise, will start on Monday and continue until March 9. Separately, the joint air, ground and naval field training exercise Foal Eagle will be held from March 1 to April 30. "Key Resolve and Foal Eagle are unpardonable war hysteria kicked up by the hooligans to desecrate our mourning period and an unpardonable infringement upon our sovereignty and dignity," the NDC said in a statement. Kim Jong-il died of a heart attack on December 17. "Our army and people will foil the moves of the group of traitors to the nation and warmongers at home and abroad for a new war with a sacred war of our own style," the NDC said, indicating it will stage a counter exercise. "War manoeuvres ... are, in essence, a silent declaration of a war. The declaration of the war is bound to be accompanied by a corresponding physical retaliation," it said. "Now that a war has been declared against us, the army and people are firmly determined to counter it with a sacred war of our own style and protect the security of the nation and the peace of the country," the NDC said. - Telegraph.

PLANETARY TREMORS: Panic After Powerful 5.9 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Taiwan!

A shallow 5.9-magnitude earthquake sent people fleeing onto the streets in Taiwan's second-largest city Kaohsiung on Sunday and rail services were temporarily suspended, but no casualties was reported.

The quake struck 57 kilometres (35 miles) east of the southern city at 10:34 am (0234 GMT) at a depth of just four kilometres, the US Geological Survey said. The Hong Kong Observatory measured the quake at magnitude 6.0, while Taiwan's Seismology Centre put the magnitude at 6.1. The National Fire Agency said there were no casualties or major material damage. "A few Kaohsiung residents sought safety in the streets for a short while, but it wasn't many," a Kaohsiung police officer told AFP. Chen Jung-yu, a spokesman for the Seismology Centre, said it was relatively rare for an earthquake of such magnitude to hit in the Kaohsiung area. "While the quake was strong, it didn't last long. Even in some towns near the epicentre, buildings swayed for no more than seven seconds. That explained why it did not inflict damages," he told AFP.

A high-speed railway linking Kaohsiung with Taiwan's capital Taipei in the north resumed about 90 minutes after the quake prompted services to be suspended. The greater metropolitan area of Kaohsiung has a population of nearly three million people. Taiwan is regularly hit by earthquakes as the island lies near the junction of two tectonic plates. In September 1999, a 7.6-magnitude tremor killed around 2,400 people in the deadliest natural disaster in the island's recent history. - Channel News Asia.
A strong earthquake struck Taiwan on Sunday, causing minor damage in the southern part of the island. There were no immediate reports of casualties and no tsunami warning was issued. Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau said the quake struck at 10:35 a.m. (0235 GMT) in a mountainous area just inland from the coastal city of Pingtung, with a magnitude of 6.1. The U.S. Geological Survey put the quake’s magnitude at 5.9 and said it had a depth of 2.9 miles (4.7 kilometers).

Taiwan television showed pictures of minor damage in the Pingtung area. TV reports said high-speed rail service had been temporarily suspended out of the southern city of Kaohsiung, north of Pingtung. Earthquakes frequently rattle Taiwan, but most are minor and cause little or no damage. However, a magnitude-7.6 earthquake in central Taiwan in 1999 killed more than 2,300 people. - Washington Post.

MASS ANIMAL DIE-OFF: Crow and Domestic Boar Deaths Mystery Continues in Maulana Azad, India?!

Mystery continues to shroud the series of deaths of crows in Maulana Azad garden. So far no report has been received against the samples of crows forwarded to High Security Animal Disease Laboratory (HSADL), Bhopal. Perplexed Chandrapur Municipal Corporation (CMC) has extended the closure of the garden by 10 more days following suggestion of animal husbandry department.

Continuous deaths of crows in Azad garden had alarmed the CMC authorities earlier this month. Flock of crows infected by the mysterious diseases were regularly being found dead in the garden. After the authorities of district veterinary polyclinic were summoned for inspection, they had suggested for closure of Azad garden for two weeks. Accordingly the garden was closed for the public till February 25. Intense fogging was carried out in the garden and entire premise was dusted with lime powder as a preventive measure to curb spread of any virus outside. While speculation was rife about the spread of some deadly avian disease among crows, vets from polyclinic had collected samples of crows and forwarded it to HSADL, Bhopal. Even as period of closure came to an end on Saturday, no report was received from the Bhopal-based lab. Meanwhile, the deaths of crows in garden premises have continued and over 85 deaths have been reported so far. But intensity of deaths of crow has reportedly diminished since last few days.

Assistant commissioner, district veterinary polyclinic, AN Somnathe said, "We have not received any report from the Bhopal lab. This indicates that tests over crow samples have proved negative to any avian disease threatening human being." "As per procedure, if tests turn out positive to some deadly disease, HSADL, Bhopal forwards its report to central government, which in turn intimates state government. In such case of emergency, district veterinary polyclinic is warned urgently through animal husbandry department. But, it's been over 15 days since sample was sent to Bhopal. It is likely that the tests turned negative," Somnathe explained. He said that the crow deaths in garden have continued, but their intensity has decreased considerably. "Last death of single crow was reported on Thursday. I have suggested CMC authorities to extend the closure of Azad garden, until deaths of crows comes to an end," he said. Administrator of CMC NB Wati said, "Unless the veterinary polyclinic gives a green signal we will continue to keep the garden closed for public. Accordingly the garden has been closed till March 5."

Boar deaths on the rise.

While the mystery over crow deaths remains unresolved, authorities are also in dark over series of deaths of domestic boars in the town. More than 80 boars have died this month. After the issue was brought into the notice of veterinary authorities, they carried out post mortem on the carcasses and had forwarded the samples to veterinary college in Nagpur. Reports of these samples too have not been received so far. Assistant commissioner, district veterinary polyclinic, AN Somnathe said that the report over swine deaths is expected by Tuesday. Earlier he had maintained that deaths of crows and swine in town have no connection with each other and these swine deaths pose no threat to humans.  - The Times of India.

GLOBAL VOLCANISM: Mount Sakurajima Continues Its Record-Breaking Activity - Produces Explosive Plumes up to Altitudes of 8,000 Feet!

According to the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report from the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program and the US Geological Survey's Volcano Hazards Program,  Mount Sakurajima's explosive release of gas, ash or rock continues unabated.

Zoom-in image of the latest eruption from Mount Sakurajima.
Based on information from JMA, the Tokyo VAAC reported that during 15-16 and 18-21 February explosions from Sakurajima produced plumes that rose to altitudes of 1.8-2.4 km (6,000-8,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted NE, E, and SE.

Geologic Summary:
Sakurajima, one of Japan's most active volcanoes, is a post-caldera cone of the Aira caldera at the northern half of Kagoshima Bay. Eruption of the voluminous Ito pyroclastic flow was associated with the formation of the 17 x 23-km-wide Aira caldera about 22,000 years ago. The construction of Sakurajima began about 13,000 years ago and built an island that was finally joined to the Osumi Peninsula during the major explosive and effusive eruption of 1914. Activity at the Kita-dake summit cone ended about 4,850 years ago, after which eruptions took place at Minami-dake. Frequent historical eruptions, recorded since the 8th century, have deposited ash on Kagoshima, one of Kyushu's largest cities, located across Kagoshima Bay only 8 km from the summit. The largest historical eruption took place during 1471-76.

ANIMAL BEHAVIOR: Hogs Gone Wild - Expanding Population of Wild Boars Creating Havoc in Pakistan?!

With a police officer wounded and the presidential palace breached, the Pakistani capital has launched a fresh offensive against a uniquely feared enemy in the Muslim country, the city's ever expanding population of wild boar.

Each night, packs of the hairy beasts emerge from Islamabad's river beds, parks and scrubland to rifle through the overflowing rubbish bins of its mostly wealthy residents and growing number of restaurants. City authorities are laying poison and have announced free hunting permits to cull the wild pigs' numbers. But to make sure residents don't get caught in the crossfire, they only allow shotguns. There have been few takers. Hunters are wary of getting arrested by the police, or even worse, getting mistaken for a terrorist. The animals can weigh up to 180 to 220 pounds (80 kilograms to 100 kilograms) and have razor sharp teeth. Adult males come armed with upward curving tusks. While they scurry off at the site of humans, they charge when cornered, alarmed or wounded and are a major cause of traffic accidents in the city. The latest chapter of man versus hog played out in a city center police station last week. "Someone shouted 'watch your back' but before I could look round the animal had hit me," said Sajjad Hussain, who was on duty when the animal slipped in past the high, razor wire-topped blast walls after guards opened the gates to let in a car. Hussain had a gash in his stomach that required eight stitches and is on medical leave.

The swine was even more unlucky. In his rush to escape, he bounded into a large pit where police barracks are being constructed. Trapped by high walls, he was an easy target for officers out to avenge their wounded colleague. Not quite fish in a barrel, but close. "The pig was like a terrorist. We shot him down," said station chief Fayaz Tanooli. "I have told the guards if another pig gets in then they will be dismissed." The hogs have also encroached upon the lavish, not to mention tightly guarded, houses of the president and prime minister. A team has been dispatched to lay poison mixed with molasses or maize, said Malik Aulya Khan, the city's environmental chief. "We are making special efforts. We have killed many with poison," he said. "Somehow they enter under the fences." Wild boars are found all over Pakistan, and are one of its major agricultural pests, gobbling their way though millions of dollars of wheat and sugarcane crops. In Punjab province in the 1980s, the government initiated a bounty system whereby villagers were paid for each tail they delivered, but it was discontinued for lack of funds. Islamabad was built from scratch in 1951 on scrubland that runs up against the Margalla Hills, meaning wild boars have always lived in or close to the city. PLANETARY TREMORS: Magnitude 6.8 Earthquake Shakes Southwest Siberia, Russia!

A magnitude-6.8 earthquake shook southwestern Siberia on Sunday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the temblor that rattled the region at 1:17 p.m. local time (0616 GMT), the agency said. The quake was centered some 11.7 kilometres (km) or 7.3 miles below the surface and was located at 51.731°N, 95.921°E.

The USGS said the quake hit 100 kilometres (62 miles) east of Kyzyl, Russia; 333 km (206 miles) northeast of Ulaangom, Mongolia; 375 km (233 miles) southeast of Abakan, Russia; and 3758 km (2335 miles) northeast of Moscow, Russia.

According to the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System (GDACS), Respublika Tyva Province is an unpopulated area (population: 0.3 million) in Russia. The likelihood for need of international humanitarian intervention is considered to be low (Green alert). This earthquake can have a low humanitarian impact since the affected region is unpopulated and has high resilience for natural disasters. The nearest populated places are Karaus (9km), Kara Khem (13km). It is a mountainous region with a maximum altitude of 2611 m.

CONVERGENCE: Imminent Rare Triple Celestial Phenomena Over Japan - Has Astronomy Buffs Breathless!

Starting with an annular eclipse on May 21, Japan will be treated to three rare celestial phenomena this year, exciting astronomy fans across the nation.

In the annular eclipse, the moon will pass between the Earth and the sun and leave nothing of our star visible but a bright golden ring. The last time the phenomenon was observed in Japan was 25 years ago in 1987, from Okinawa. Weather permitting, this year's annular eclipse will be visible from southern Kagoshima Prefecture to southern Fukushima Prefecture -- a swathe of Japan with over 80 million residents. According to the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) in Mitaka, Tokyo, the coming annular eclipse will be the first spectacle observable from such a large area in 932 years. Furthermore, in locations outside the abovementioned area, a partial eclipse is expected to be visible.

May 21 falls on a Monday, and the annular eclipse is expected to be observable around 7:30 a.m. "Many people will likely be able to see it from their own homes," says Masato Katayama, head of the NAOJ's Ephemeris Computation Office. The prospects of this lucky year have astronomy buffs ecstatic. "All three (phenomena) are rare, magical astronomical events that one can hope to see once in a lifetime, if at all," says TV weather forecaster Takeshi Amatatsu. "That all three will take place in the same year makes me so happy to be living in this time."

Masaya Kawaguchi, editor of the monthly magazine Hoshi Navi ("Star Navigation"), meanwhile, has seen a total of three annular eclipses in both Japan and abroad. "As you watch the sun slowly wane, you're able to perceive that the moon is indeed orbiting the Earth, and get a feel for how fast it's moving," he says. In the second of the three phenomena, Venus will transit in front of the sun on June 6, meaning that Venus will appear as a black dot moving across the sun's surface. Experts say that it will be more than a century before the event will be visible again from Japan. In the third phenomenon, meanwhile, an occultation of Venus by the moon on Aug. 14, Venus will disappear behind the moon and reappear in the eastern sky before dawn. - MDN.

PLANETARY TREMORS: The Seismic Swarm Continues in Hawaii With Over 100 Earthquakes - Between Kilauea and Mauna Loa Volcanoes!

The U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) has recorded more than 100 earthquakes in a swarm that began around 1:17 a.m., HST, on Wednesday, February 22, 2012. The earthquakes are located about 5 km (3 mi) north-northwest of Kilauea volcano’s summit, near Namakanipaio in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, at depths of 2–5 km (1–3 mi).

The largest earthquakes of the ongoing swarm have been a magnitude-4.1 quake at 9:02 p.m. last night and a magnitude-4.3 quake at 3:52 a.m. this morning. These earthquakes were widely felt on the Island of Hawai‘i. As of 9:00 a.m. Friday, the USGS “Did you feel it?” Web site ( had received 74 felt reports for the 9:02 p.m. earthquake and more than 60 felt reports for the 3:52 a.m. event. The initial magnitude of the 9:02 p.m. earthquake was estimated at 4.1 by HVO’s automated software system, but then increased to magnitude-4.3. After close review by HVO seismic analysts this morning, the earthquake’s magnitude has been calculated to be 4.1.

The effects of the early morning magnitude-4.3 earthquake were evident at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory building, which is located less than 4 km (2.5 mi) from the swarm’s center. HVO staff noticed that a few books and other items had fallen off shelves and some small ceiling fixtures were dislodged. Several residents of the Volcano Golf Course subdivision, located about 3 km (2 mi) from the earthquake epicenter, also reported items falling from shelves, causing some minor breakage. As of this morning, the seismic swarm has also included 3 earthquakes with magnitudes between 3.0 and 3.9, and 25 earthquakes with magnitudes of 2.0 to 2.9. The magnitudes of another 88 located earthquakes are between 1.0 and 1.9.

The earthquake swarm is located at the north end of the Ka‘oiki Pali, near the boundary between Mauna Loa and Kilauea volcanoes. This area has experienced previous seismic swarms in 1990, 1993, 1997, and 2006, each of which lasted from 1 day to several weeks. According to Jim Kauahikaua, HVO’s Scientist-in-Charge, it’s likely that high rates of seismicity could continue in this area for several days. He added that the earthquake swarm has not caused any obvious changes in Kilauea’s magma plumbing system or ongoing eruptions, but that the magnitude-4.3 earthquake did cause a small rockfall in the active vent located within Halema‘uma‘u Crater at the summit of Kilauea. GLOBAL VOLCANISM: Costa Rica's Rincon de la Vieja Volcano Awakens!

The Rincón de la Vieja volcano is not as famous as the Arenal, Poas or Irazú, lying in the northern part of the country away from the main tourism corridor. However, it is an active volcano and on Thursday it decide to lets its neighbours know that it still there.

The Red Sismológica Nacional (RSN) reported an eruption between 4:00am and 4:30am Thursday, waking area residents, including those in Hacienda Guachipelin.

In addition, seismological records confirmed that the colossus had two other eruptions this month, on Sunday February 19 (12:16am) and Monday February 20 (12:46am).

There have been no reported consequences associated with the activity. The last major activity at the Rincón de la Vieja occurred in September 2011 with a series of phreatic explosions. The RSN will be keeping a close eye on the volcano and monitor its activity. - Inside Costa Rica.
