MASS FISH DIE-OFF: More Than 10,000 Carp Found Dead in Blue Springs Lake, Missouri?!

Missouri conservationists are trying to solve a mystery in an area lake.  What started as a couple dozen dead carp turned into more than 10,000 in Blue Springs Lake

Conservationists took water samples and couldn't figure out exactly what caused the deaths. Their samples have now gone onto a national lab for further analysis.  Between 500 and 1,000 carp have been killed everyday. Jake Allman, a biologist with the Missouri Conservation, started noticing carp with lesions under their scales the last few weeks.  "There's a little bacteria on the fish, but not enough to really have caused this," Allman said.

"This feeding activity where they are brushing up against each other can actually spread whatever is making them sick."  If Allman had his way, this kill would only continue.  "Their spawning activity disrupts spawning of other fish. They root around in the shallows and uproot aquatic vegetation which is beneficial to native fish," Allman explained.  But it seems the carp are now starting to recover.  Lake officials are now keeping an eye on the E. coli levels in the water.  They had to close a swimming area during Memorial Day Weekend because of a threat of E. Coli from of all the dead fish. - KSHB.

EXTRATERRESTRIAL & UFO MEMES: Mass UFO Sighting in Israel - Hundreds of People Flood Police With Reports of UFO Over the Nation's Skies!

Hundreds of Israelis nationwide flooded police hotlines Thursday evening with reports about seeing an unidentified flying object in the nation's skies.     A prominent Israeli astronomer said the object flew above Lebanese territory and is not a meteor. The UFO was also clearly visible in Palestinian territories.

A similar sighting in Norway three years ago turned out to be a failed missile test. The object was initially spotted in northern Israel, but was later reported being seen as far south as Gedera. The IDF Northern Command said it was unaware of any IDF operations in the area. Officials were also checking whether the Air Force was related to the sighting.  According to the reports, received around 9 pm Thursday, the unidentified object gave off light and was followed by a smoke trail. Numerous reports of the sighting were also received by Ynet. The unidentified body was also spotted at the Givataim observatory in central Israel. Dr. Yigal Pat-El, the chairman of the Israeli Astronomical Association and observatory director, confirmed the sighting and said the origin of the object is unclear. "It looked like a small body that suddenly started to grow and make spiral-like movements," he said. "After a while, it turned into a looked like an object flying high above ground and then disintegrating."

"It reached a height of some 80 kilometers and flew north of the border with Lebanon," he said. "It wasn't a meteor. We saw a large trail of light traveling from a distant spot in the sky," Dorit from northern Israel reported. "We could not see the source of the light. The trail was massive. It was an unusual sight. Moments later we saw swirling movement where the light was coming from." Gal Arbiv said he noticed the mysterious light while traveling from Ashkelon to Kiryat Malachi, in southern Israel. "We saw a circle with light coming out of it slowly; it was growing from one moment to the next. Suddenly it became a spiral and turned into a cloud," he said.     Ofer Levy from Gedera said he noticed the unusual sight after leaving the gym. "I saw massive light from the west," he said. "I thought it was the moon but suddenly the light turned into a cloud or fog. I know it sounds unreal, but something happened here."     Notably, similar reports were received in Norway in 2009, following a failed Russian missile test. SOLAR WATCH: The Sun is Buffeting Earth's Magnetic Field With Solar Winds - Sunspots Produce M-Class Eruptions; Chances of Geomagnetic Storms!

According to Space Weather, Earth is inside a high-speed stream of solar wind flowing from this coronal hole and Sunspot 1494 poses a threat for M-class eruptions.

SOLAR WIND: For the third day in a row, a stream of fast solar wind is buffeting Earth's magnetic field. NOAA forecasters estimate a 40% chance of geomagnetic storms around the poles on June 7th.
CHANCE OF FLARES: The odds of a significant solar flare are improving as three sunspots develop complex magnetic fields with energy for M-class eruptions. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded this extreme ultraviolet flash (category M3) from sunspot AR1494 on June 6th. The impulsive flare hurled a coronal mass ejection into space, but not directly toward Earth. The cloud should sail mostly south of our planet on June 8-9. EXTREME WEATHER: Blistering Heatwave Kills at Least 32 in India! UPDATE: Death Toll Rises to Over 100!

At least 32 people have died of heat wave in three districts of southern Bengal in the past two days, officials said. 

Several parts of India are reeling under a severe heat wave.
"Twenty-seven people died in areas near Asansol due to intense heatwave prevailing in the area. Thirty others, including 3 policemen, were admitted in hospital after they fell sick due to heatwave," Dr Nikhil Chandra Das, superintendent, Asansol sub-divisional hospital, said.  Five people died in Asansol on Monday with the temperature in mining and industrial areas running more than 43 degrees Celsius for the past couple of days, he said. 

Three others -- Dulal Chandra, 45, Surajit Dey, 65, and Moli Hansda, 35, -- died of heatstroke in Hoogly district, health department officials said.  In Purulia district near Jharkhand, one person died of heat wave when returning to his village from Chharahh railway station, police said, adding that the temperature in the area reached 45.6 degree Celsius at the time.  An unknown person was found dead at an abandoned tea stall at Satighat on the outskirts of Bankura town. He is suspected to have died of the intense heat, they said. Meanwhile, some areas of Purulia district are facing shortage of drinking water while civic authorities of Purulia, Raghunathpur and Jhalda towns have been supplying it once in a day instead of twice. - Rediff News.
UPDATE: Death Toll Rises to Over 100.
Heat wave caused over 100 deaths in Bengal in this week. Eight deaths were reported on Wednesday. In Bengal majority of deaths were reported from Asansol -Durgapur belt. There had been 43 deaths from Durgapur and Asansol belt of Burdwan. Asansol and Durgapur is having a temperature of 47 degree Celsius. Even Midnapore (west) is having a temperature of around 44 degree celsius. Midnapore (west) recorded 18 deaths and similarly Purulia had 18 deaths, where the temperature is hovering over 46 degree. - Times of India.

SEASON OF THE WINDS: Countrywide Dust Storms Kill 15 in Pakistan - Flights Disrupted; Trees Uprooted, Widespread Power Outages!

Strong dust storms lashed various parts of Pakistan Tuesday, killing at least 15 people, including five children, media reports said.

Dozens of people were injured in various incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Balochistan provinces, as rains also lashed the Punjab plains, Geo News reported. The storms uprooted trees, signboards and electricity polls. Power supply also remained suspended in many areas.
According to Xinhua, at least seven people, including two women and a child, were killed in Peshawar and its adjoining areas. In Punjab, a dust storm killed eight people including four children.
Flight schedules were also disrupted in parts of Punjab due to low visibility. The winds hit with a speed of up to 90 km per hour in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 75 km per hour in Punjab, meteorological offices reported. - Zee News.

EXTREME WEATHER ANOMALIES: The Hottest Rain on Record Ever - Rain Falls at a Stunning 109°F in Saudi Arabia?!

Pilgrims to the holy city of Mekkah (Mecca), Saudi Arabia must have been astonished on Tuesday afternoon, when the weather transformed from widespread dust with a temperature of 113°F (45°C) to a thunderstorm with rain. Remarkably, the air temperature during the thunderstorm was a sizzling 109°F (43°C), and the relative humidity a scant 18%. It is exceedingly rare to get rain when the temperature rises above 100°F, since those kind of temperatures usually require a high pressure system with sinking air that discourages rainfall.

However, on June 4, a sea breeze formed along the shores of the Red Sea, and pushed inland 45 miles (71 km) to Mekkah by mid-afternoon. Moist air flowing eastwards from the Red Sea hit the boundary of the sea breeze and was forced upwards, creating rain-bearing thunderstorms. According to weather records researcher Maximiliano Herrera, this is the highest known temperature that rain has fallen at, anywhere in the world. He knows of one other case where rain occurred at 109°F (43°C): in Marrakech, Morocco on July 10, 2010. A thunderstorm that began at 5 pm local time brought rain at a remarkably low humidity of 14%, cooling the temperature down to 91°F within an hour. Thunderstorms often produce big drops of cold rain, since these raindrops form several thousand meters high in the atmosphere, where temperatures are much cooler than near the surface.

Some drops even get their start as snow or ice particles, which melt on the way to the surface. Additional cooling of the drops occurs due to evaporation on the way down. However, in the case of the June 4, 2012 Mekkah storm, I think the rain was probably more like a hot shower. Large raindrops, like the kind thunderstorms produce, fall at a speed of about 10 meters per second. A balloon sounding of the upper atmosphere taken at 3 pm local time at a nearby station (Al-Midinah) found that the bottom 1000 meters of the atmosphere was 97°F (36°C) or warmer. Thus, the thunderstorms' raindrops would have been subjected to 100 seconds of some very hot air on the way to the surface, likely warming them above 100°F by the time they hit the ground. A classic 1948 study of raindrops found that, in many cases, raindrop temperatures start off cold in the first few minutes of a rain shower, then warm up to within 1°C (1.8°F) of the air temperature within a few minutes.

With the air temperature a sizzling 109°F (43°C) at the time of the June 4 thunderstorm in Mekkah, the raindrops could easily have been heated to a temperature of over 105°F (41°C) by the time they reached the surface! If substantial amounts of liquid water are present on the Earth, the planet will experience rain, as long as some mechanism to lift the warm, moist air and cause condensation can be found. If the climate continues to warm as expected, we should see an increasing number of cases where it rains at temperatures well above 100°F. On Saturday, June 2, the temperature in Mekkah hit 51.4°C (124.5°F), a new record for the city, and just 1.1°F (0.6°C) below the all-time hottest temperature record for Saudi Arabia (125.6°F, or 52°C, recorded at Jeddah on June 22, 2010.) I expect that 20 - 40 years from now, we'll begin seeing occasional cases where rain falls at a temperature above 117°F (47°C) in the desert regions of North Africa and the Middle East. - Wunderground.

GLOBAL VOLCANISM: High Hydrothermal Pressure - New Earthquake Swarm Under the Icecap of Iceland's Katla Volcano!

A new swarm of earthquakes has started Tuesday (5 June) evening at Katla volcano. Until now, 34 quakes up to magnitude 2 have been recorded beneath the volcano, at mostly shallow depths around 3-7 km. The quakes are clustered in the SE part of the caldera, and could indicate that a magmatic intrusion is taking place in this area. Whether this is a precursor to a possible eruption of the volcano remains speculation.

According to Wikipedia, Katla is a large volcano in southern Iceland. It is very active; twenty eruptions have been documented between 930 and 1918, at intervals of 13–95 years. It has not erupted violently for 94 years, although there may have been small eruptions that did not break the ice cover, including ones in 1955 and 1999. Prior eruptions have had a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of between 4 and 6 on a scale of 0 to 8. In comparison, the Eyjafjallajökull 2010 eruption had a VEI4. The bigger VEI6 eruptions are comparable to Mount Pinatubo's 1991 eruption. Katla is one of the largest volcanoes in Iceland. It is situated to the north of Vík í Mýrdal and to the east of the smaller glacier Eyjafjallajökull. Its peak reaches 1,512 metres (4,961 ft) and is partially covered by the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. The system has an area of 595 km² (230 sq mi). The Eldgjá canyon is part of the same volcanic system. The caldera of the Katla volcano has a diameter of 10 km (6 mi) and is covered with 200–700 metres (660-2,300 ft) of ice. The volcano normally erupts every 40–80 years. The flood discharge at the peak of an eruption in 1755 has been estimated at 200,000–400,000 m³/s (7.1-14.1 million cu ft/sec), comparable to the combined average discharge of the Amazon, Mississippi, Nile, and Yangtze rivers (about 266,000 m³/s (9.4 million cu ft/sec)).

EXTREME WEATHER: Severe Colorado Storm - Large Hail, Tornado Near DIA and Heavy Flooding Around Front Range!

April showers bring May flowers, but what do June hail storms and tornadoes bring? After several days of warm weather, on Wednesday night the Colorado sky opened up and unleashed severe weather upon the state delivering spectacular lightning, large hail balls and even some weak tornadoes around the Front Range.

And apparently it's not over yet. We'll get a break Thursday during the day, but 9News reports that around 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon, storms will build again along the Front Range and move east throughout the evening and into the night producing the possibility for more large hail, tornadoes, and high winds.
According to 7News, a number of tornadoes and funnel clouds were reported Wednesday. And at one point last night, hail stopped traffic along I-25 at County Line Road and 3 to 5 inches of rain flooded nearby roads.
Jim Kalina, National Weather Service meteorologist, told The Denver Post that a small tornado was spotted near Denver International Airport (watch video of the tornado below) around 5 p.m., on Wednesday. The National Weather Service also received reports of a tornado in northeastern Colorado around 6:40 p.m. that tore a small tree from the ground and thew it about 20 feet. - Huffington Post.

GLOBAL VOLCANISM: Magmatic Intrusion of the El Hierro Island, Canary Islands - New Earthquake Swarm, 16 in Just One Day!

The earthquake swarm at El Hierro volcano continues. Yesterday, a total of 16 quakes including one of magnitude 2.9 were recorded. The quakes are clustered around the 15-20 km depth beneath the El Golfo bay, where a new magmatic intrusion could be taking place. The harmonic tremor signal has risen slightly as well.

A submarine eruption began south of El Hierro Island in early October, following an intense period of earthquakes starting in July 2011. As of mid February 2012, it is still continuing and still raising speculation about the possibility of the eruption breaking the surface. However, it seems that this scenario is unlikely as there is a trend of decreasing intensity, suggesting the eruption might be approaching an end. However, volcanoes are unpredictable and this eruption could still go on for a very long time as well. - Volcano Discovery.

PLANETARY TREMORS: Magnitude 6.0 Earthquake Jolts Southern Peru!

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake has struck Southern Peru on Thursday, June 07, 2012 at 16:03:18 UTC.

The tremor was located at 15.919°S, 72.516°W with a depth of 99.7 km (62.0 miles).  The epicentre was 119 km (74 miles) northwest (298°) from Arequipa, Peru; 216 km (134 miles) southeast (128°) from Puquio, Peru; 221 km (137 miles) northwest (310°) from Moquegua, Peru; and 648 km (402 miles) southeast (131°) from Lima, Peru.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey,  the South American arc extends over 7,000 km, from the Chilean margin triple junction offshore of southern Chile to its intersection with the Panama fracture zone, offshore of the southern coast of Panama in Central America. It marks the plate boundary between the subducting Nazca plate and the South America plate, where the oceanic crust and lithosphere of the Nazca plate begin their descent into the mantle beneath South America. The convergence associated with this subduction process is responsible for the uplift of the Andes Mountains, and for the active volcanic chain present along much of this deformation front. Relative to a fixed South America plate, the Nazca plate moves slightly north of eastwards at a rate varying from approximately 80 mm/yr in the south to approximately 70 mm/yr in the north.

Subduction zones such as the South America arc are geologically complex and generate numerous earthquakes from a variety of tectonic processes that cause deformation of the western edge of South America. Crustal deformation and subsequent mountain building in the overriding South America plate generate shallow earthquakes. Slip along the dipping interface between the two plates generates frequent and often large interplate earthquakes between depths of approximately 10 to 60 km. Since 1900, numerous magnitude 8 or greater earthquakes have occurred on the interface between the Nazca and South America plates, including the 1960 M9.5 earthquake in southern Chile, the largest instrumentally recorded earthquake in the world and the 2010 M8.8 earthquake north of the 1960 quake. Earthquakes can also be generated to depths greater than 600 km from internal deformation of the subducting Nazca plate. Although the rate of subduction varies little along the entire subduction zone, there are complex changes in geologic processes along the subduction zone that dramatically influence volcanic activity, earthquake generation and occurrence. For example, an extended zone of crustal seismicity in central-northern Argentina highlights a well-known "flat-slab" region of this subduction zone, where the Nazca plate moves horizontally for several hundred kilometers before continuing its descent into the mantle.

PLANETARY TREMORS: Italy's Farm Lobby Lifts Quake Damage Estimate to 705 Million Euros - 25 People Killed; Over 2,000 Farms Severely Damaged; 8,000 Jobs May be Lost!

Recent earthquakes in northern Italy have severely damaged some 2,000 farms and inflicted losses amounting to 705 million euros, agricultural lobby group Coldiretti said on Wednesday, lifting previous damage estimates by over 200 million euros.

The revised estimate came as the head of Italy's main business association said the earthquakes would halt output in many local factories for up to six months and could crimp national gross domestic product.  Earthquakes hit the area around Modena in the prosperous region of Emilia Romagna last month, killing 26 people, leaving more than 10,000 homeless, and damaging or destroying thousands of buildings including farms, factories and historic churches and castles.  Coldiretti said damage of about 400 million euros had been caused to farm buildings and another 70 million euros would be needed to secure damaged irrigation installations.  In addition, 220 million euros worth of damage had been done to production of Parmigiano Reggiano and Grana Padano, the two main varieties of parmesan cheese, and another 15 million euros of damage to production of Modena balsamic vinegar.  Coldiretti had previously estimated damage to the agricultural sector would total around 500 million euros.  Confindustria President Giorgio Squinzi said the two quakes and the almost uninterrupted series of smaller aftershocks that have rattled the area since would halt production in many factories by between four and six months.  "The area generates around 1 percent of GDP, so we risk losing a few fractions of a point of GDP just from the earthquakes," he told reporters at the margins of a conference in Rome.  In the latest in a series of aftershocks, a magnitude 4.5 tremor struck off the coast of the city of Ravenna early on Wednesday without causing any damage.  But with the summer holiday season approaching, the shock raised fears of a negative impact on tourism revenues. - Reuters.
Meanwhile, around 8,000 jobs in Italy's agriculture sector may be lost following two deadly earthquakes in the northern part of the country last month, an agriculture trade group has said. 
Damaged harvesting equipment and irrigation infrastructure may severely hurt the farming industry in the Emilia-Romagna region, where 10 percent of the agriculture industry is located, said the Coldiretti trade group.  Jobs may have to be cut from agro-businesses while livestock are being sold because of damage caused to animal stalls, Coldiretti said.  Damage to fruit production may also hit Italy's July harvest.  Around 80 percent of the country's pears come from the area affected by the May 20 and 29 quakes that killed 25 people, left thousands homeless and caused losses worth billions of euros.  Following the first quake, Coldiretti said farmers lost around 200 million euros, partly due to 400,000 damaged wheels of parmesan cheese. - Two Circles.

GLOBAL VOLCANISM: The Nevado del Ruiz Volcano in Colombia, Continues to be Monitored - Increase in Ash and Gas Emissions, Eruption Probable!

The volatile Nevado del Ruiz volcano is being closely monitored by officials in central-eastern Colombia.

The country's minister of mines and energy, Mauricio Cardenas, warned residents in areas surrounding the volcano, near the borders of the departments of Tolima and Caldas, to implement the necessary preventative measures in case of an eruption. A May 29 earthquake sent plumes of ash billowing at heights close to 4,000 feet above the volcano's crater. La Nubia Airport in Manizales has been shut down for a week. 

The airport "remains closed because there is still the presence of ash that may affect the aircraft," said the deputy director of Aerocivil, Colombia's governmental aviation agency.  Recent weeks have seen an increase in ash and gas emissions, according to Cardenas.  The Red Cross has already evacuated at least 500 people from the areas of Rio Claro and Playon in the department of Antioquia, as well as settlements near the town of Villa Maria in the department of Caldas, regions both affected by the volcanic ash emissions.  The alert level for Nevado del Ruiz sits at orange, meaning an eruption is probable but not imminent.  An estimated 25,000 people were killed after Nevado del Ruiz erupted in 1985. - Colombia Reports.

FIRE IN THE SKY: Large Fireball Over West Oklahoma and North Texas!

This evening, in the midst of developing thunderstorms, one of the flashes across the sky wasn't lightning! One large bolide or fireball came roaring to Earth. GLOBAL VOLCANISM: New Series of Eruptions at the Manum Island's Volcano - Residents Warned to Take Precautions!

Residents living around Manam Island off Madang in Papua New Guinea have been warned to take precautions after volcanic eruptions on the island. 

Manam is one of PNG's most active volcanos and recent explosions in the craters have been heard 15 kilometres away.  Ima Itakarai from Rabaul's Volcanology Observatory says he doesn't believe a major eruption is imminent, but it cannot be ruled out.  "There has been an ongoing mild eruptive activity happening at one of the craters on the side of Manam," he said.  "That activity has consisted of occasional plumes, coming up every now and then, with a bright glow at night." - Radio Australia.

EXTREME WEATHER: Severe Thunderstorms and Tornadoes Rips Through Southern Ontario!

A band of thunderstorms prompted Environment Canada to issue tornado warnings for parts of cottage country north of Barrie, including Parry Sound, Rosseau, Killbear Park, Hunstville and Baysville, Wednesday evening.

The warning, issued shortly after 5 p.m., said the severe thunderstorms in the area had the potential to produce large hail, damaging winds and heavy rainfall, as well as tornadoes. The tornado warnings ended just before 7 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning was also issued for areas east of Toronto, starting around Pickering.

In Toronto, rain and thunder was reported by 5 p.m., with Environment Canada predicting a risk of thunderstorm through the evening.

There were no weather warnings or watches issued for the Toronto area. - CTV News.
