DISASTER PREPAREDNESS: United States, China and the Philippines Hold Mega-Earthquake and Tsunami Simulation Drills!

December 02, 2012 - CHINA - Military officers of China and the United States have held a joint indoor war game to practice humanitarian rescue and disaster relief in case of an earthquake and consequent nuclear leaks.  The two-day exercise, that ended on Friday, was staged in Chengdu, capital city of southwest China's Sichuan Province.

China and the United States Conclude Post-Earthquake Simulation Drill.
A total of 32 people from the two countries attended the drills on humanitarian rescue, based on the scenario of a 7.8-magnitude earthquake in an unspecific Southeast Asian country, causing huge damages, injuries and leaks of chemical and radiative materials, according to a statement by the Chinese delegation.  The participants included officials from the China Earthquake Administration and the US government as well as members for functions of intelligence, combat, communication, engineering, anti-chemical and anti-radiation, logistics, medical treatment, journalism, research and rescue as well as legal affairs.  The delegations discussed issues of decision-making, organization, command, action and coordination in the rescue mission.  Both sides expressed appreciation for the exercise and agreed that the drill will help to deepen practical cooperation in unconventional security fields between the two countries' militaries, the statement said.  This is the first joint indoor exercise between the two countries' militaries, and is an important part of the eighth exchange activity between the armed forces of the China and the United States on humanitarian rescue and disaster relief, according to Tang Fen, head of the Chinese delegation.  After the drill, the US delegation will also visit sites hit by the 2008 Wenchuan quake, the statement added. - Global Times.

Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake and Tsunami Drill Set For December 3 in the Philippines.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) is all set to stage the 4th Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake, Tsunami Drill that will be held in the municipalities of Lian and Talisay, Batangas, and Puerto Galera, Or. Mindoro on Monday, December 3.  The quarterly earthquake drill aims to increase public awareness on disaster preparedness as well as assess the capabilities of government agencies and the local governments units (LGUs) in responding to such calamity.  According to the NDRRMC, the scenario is that of a 7.9 magnitude earthquake which occurs due to the movement of the Manila Trench creating tsunami affecting Barangay Binusbusan in Lian and a seichi, (term used for tsunami in lakes) in Taal Lake also affecting Barangay Poblacion in Talisay, Batangas.  Earlier, a team composed of reprentatives from Philvolcs, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Office of Civil Defense (OCD), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Health (DOH), Southern Luzon Command (Solcom), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Philippine National Police (PNP), and provincial/municipal DRRRMC held an orientation on the importance and mechanics of the drill to barangay residents.  In preparation, a dry run participated by the NDRRMC member-agencies, the LGUs and barangay residents was held last Nov. 28 to iron out kinks thay may arise and hamper the smooth flow of the earthquake drill on Monday.  NDRMMC Usec Benito Ramos spearheads the earthquake drill that is also expected to be graced by Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin. DISASTER IMPACT: Food Aid is Desperately Needed in Guatemala After Devastating Earthquake - World Food Programme Urgently Needs US $3,671,923 Million Dollars!

December 02, 2012 - GUATEMALA - The UN World Food Programme (WFP) said today it urgently needs US $3,671,923 million dollars to ensure the survival of those affected by the recent earthquake in Guatemala.

Along with the Mendez family, many others were affected by the loss of homes. This little girl, named Juana, observes what is left of her home after the earthquake. The families have started to clean up the rubbish and save what they can. Credits: WFP/Luis Molina.
Colder temperatures are arriving too making the situation even more dangerous. WFP said today its food supply is low "seriously endangering its response capacities. Urgent funding is required to meet the needs of about 115,000 people." As of today no new donations had been received. WFP relies entirely on voluntary donations from governments and the public.

Prior to the earthquake food aid was helping Guatemalans overcome the impact of drought. WFP is now diverting some of that aid toward the earthquake response. An estimated 30,866 houses are reported as damaged by the earthquake. In some cases supplies of food were lost with the destruction of the home. In addition, the cost and time needed to rebuild the homes will put a severe strain on already impoverished families.

Food aid will be crucial in both the emergency response and reconstruction in Guatemala. - Examiner.

GLOBAL VOLCANISM: Tracking Activity at Tolbachik Volcano in Russia - Eruption Destroys Science Camps!

December 02, 2012 - RUSSIA - Lava flows from the slope of erupting volcano Plosky Tolbachik in Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula have destroyed two nearby scientific camps, a local branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences said on Friday.

The 3,085-meter Plosky Tolbachik, which is part of a volcanic complex located 343 km from the region's capital of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, erupted Nov 27 for the first time in 36 years.

The two camps were located 10 km from the volcano.

The eruption has been already assigned a Red Code status as the volcano is throwing clouds of ash to the height of 3,000 meters with the potential for ash explosions up to 10 km.

Residents of nearby villages have been advised not to leave their homes as massive ash falls in the area are filled with toxic sulfur fumes.

The clouds of volcanic ash could also pose threat to air traffic because the tiny particles cause problems with aircraft engine turbines.

The Plosky Tolbachik erupted 10 times since records began in 1740, with the most notable eruption in 1975, commonly known as The Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption. Soviet scientists successfully predicted the eruption because it was preceded by a series of earthquakes.

The 1975 eruption dramatically changed the local landscape and became an ecological disaster as the volume of lava and ashes emitted by the Plosky Tolbachik was the largest in recorded history of Kamchatka.

There are more than 150 volcanoes on Kamchatka, 30 of them active. - Two Circles.

GLOBAL VOLCANISM: Volcanologists Predicted That a Massive Volcanic Eruption is in the Cards For Japan!

December 02, 2012 - JAPAN -   Japan should brace for a catastrophic volcanic eruption at some point, say experts, citing a massive buildup of magma at many of the nation's 110 active volcanoes.  The last particularly serious eruption in Japan occurred in 1914, when Mount Sakurajima in southern Kagoshima Prefecture blew its top.  According to study by volcanologists, Japan, which lies on the Pacific Rim of Fire, has been shaken by more than 1,000 volcanic eruptions over the past 2,000 years.

Mount Fuji, Japan's most famous volcano (Asahi Shimbun file photo).
"The possibility of a major eruption in the future is real," said Yoichi Nakamura, a professor of volcanology at Utsunomiya University who has been analyzing volcanic eruptions with a team of researchers.  To be classified as active, a volcano must have erupted within the past 10,000 years or still be spewing gases, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.  The active volcanoes include sites in the disputed Northern Territories off northeastern Hokkaido as well as undersea volcanoes.  Of the 110 active volcanoes, the agency monitors activity of the 47 around the clock to detect signs of an imminent eruption.  When offshore Mount Sakurajima erupted, it spewed out so much lava that it created a land bridge with the Osumi Peninsula. Volcanic ash even fell on eastern Japan.  The researchers said seismic activity surged at 20 active volcanoes around Japan, including Mount Fuji, after the magnitude-9.0 Great East Japan Earthquake struck last year.  It was one of the most powerful earthquakes on record. It struck with such force that the Japanese land mass shifted.

Over the past century, volcanic eruptions around the world were apparently triggered by magnitude-9.0 or stronger earthquakes that struck several years earlier.  Nakamura also is involved with the nonprofit Vocanological Society of Japan. He said the study was intended to help local officials prepare for a contingency resulting from a major eruption by assessing the risks posed by volcanoes around the country.  Particularly worrisome, he said, was a lack of data pointing to a reduction in magma. In the absence of a really huge eruption for a century suggested there was a massive buildup of magma, which at some point will inevitably spew from a volcano with tremendous force.  According to the study, 1,162 eruptions have occurred in Japan over the past 2,000 years. Of these, 52 were major events that spewed a massive volume of ash and lava over a short period. It amounts to a large-scale eruption occurring every 38 years.  Records show that three volcanic eruptions in the 17th century, including one at Mount Hokkaido-Komagadake in Hokkaido in 1640, spewed out the equivalent of 1 billion cubic meters of ash and lava.  Two similar eruptions occurred in the 18th century, one of which involved Mount Fuji in 1707.

The study showed that relatively large eruptions occurred 124 times.  There were 562 instances of medium-scale eruptions, or one every 3.6 years.  These included the eruption of Mount Unzen-Fugendake in Nagasaki Prefecture in 1991 and the eruption of Mount Usuzan in Hokkaido in 2000.  Of the 1,162 eruptions, the 47 volcanoes consistently monitored by the Japan Meteorological Agency represent nearly 90 percent of the activity, or 1,012 of those events.  Mount Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture is the most active volcano with 167 recorded eruptions, followed by Mount Asama straddling Nagano and Gunma prefectures, at 124; Mount Sakurajima, at 91; Mount Izu-Oshima in Tokyo, at 77; and Mount Kirishima straddling - Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures, at 70.  Mount Fuji has erupted 38 times. - AJW.

HIGH STRANGENESS: Mysterious Objects Scares Villagers in Dadu District in India?!

December 02, 2012 - CHINA - Several days ago, I highlighted the growing security concern along the India/China border about hundreds sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFOs).

Top security brass of the Indian government is battling a "mysterious" threat from the Chinese side these days: tennis ball-sized UFOs.  Hundreds of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) have been sighted inside the Indian territory bordering China in recent months, raising security concerns. The issue, initially dubbed a minor one, has turned serious as India prepares to raise it at the diplomatic level with China. Sources said a meeting of the boundary coordination mechanism - a high level official mechanism set up by the two sides to ensure that the boundary incidents between their armed forces do not escalate - is being scheduled later this month where the issue of "luminous objects" will be at the centre of the discussion.  The Indian delegation will be led by Gautam Bambawale, the head of the China desk in the external affairs ministry, while China will be represented by its director general, department of boundary and oceanic affairs. Security officials from both sides will also participate in the meeting.  Highly placed sources said over 150 such incidents have been reported in the last three months and that India's protests at the local border personnel meeting with the Chinese have met with a cursory denial. The government's decision to raise the 'UFO ' issue at the diplomatic level follows a detailed report sought from the Defence Research and Development Organisation and the Indian Army, and a spectrum analyser to ascertain the objects.  Surprisingly, the radar could not detect these objects indicating that they were nonmetallic.  Also, the spectrum analyser could not detect any signals emitted by them.  The army also flew a reconnaissance drone in the direction of the floating objects, but it didn't yield anything substantial.  "Earlier these reports coming from various sectors of the boundary were sketchy but now we have definite proof of these yellowish spheres coming from the Chinese side; and our concerns will be raised," a source said. - India Today

A few days ago, came reports of mysterious objects falling from the sky in the Dadu District in India.

Fear and bewilderment overtook some parts of Dadu district after some mysterious objects fell on a number of villages late on  Wednesday night.  The biggest fragment weighing 187 kilograms fell on a ground in Allah Jurio Lund village, 30 kilometres from Dadu.  Other pieces fell on Pir Mashaikh, Shehak Rodnani and Khandhani  villages.  There were no injuries or damage to property.  (According to news agencies, military authorities took possession of the “heavy pieces of engine and other metallic objects, believed to be splinters of a satellite or missile”. An Army team, headed by Commanding Officer of Hyderabad, Col. Mushtaque, arrived in Dadu on Thursday and started investigation after taking two pieces of the object).  Sain Bux Loond, a villager, told journalists that he was at his home when a loud bang drew him outside. “First I couldn’t make head or tail of the scene before my eyes. After gathering my wits I dashed to the police station and told them what I had seen,” Loond said.  A former nazim of union council Sawro, Allah Yar Rodhnan, told Dawn that he too came across a piece of the indescribable object. “It was a piece of iron, five feet long and two feet wide.”  Khalid Jamali, who lives in Chhapar Khan village of Johi taluka, told Dawn on mobile phone that two pieces of iron, one weighing six kilograms and the other two kilos, had fallen on his settlement, too. “Both fragments gave off flames for half an hour. Luckily, no loss of life or property occurred in the village.” - DAWN.

MAJOR STORM ALERT: Palau, Philippines Brace For Powerful Super Typhoon Bopha - May Inflict More Damage Than "Sendong"!

December 02, 2012 - PACIFIC OCEAN - Remember typhoon “Sendong,” which left nearly 1,300 people dead in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro cities in mid-December last year?  An even more powerful cyclone is roaring toward Mindanao, triggering warnings for what forecasters said could be the strongest typhoon to hit the country this year.  The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said typhoon “Pablo” was forecast to be stronger than Sendong.  Bopha entered the Philippine area of responsibility last night, PAGASA said.  State weather forecasters said Bopha will bring torrential rains and strong winds in many parts of the country, particularly in the Visayas and Mindanao, beginning tomorrow.  PAGASA weather division chief Robert Sawi said the storm was forecast to move closer to Northern Mindanao tomorrow morning. It is expected to make landfall in Surigao del Norte or Surigao del Sur before noon Tuesday.

PAGASA MTSAT ENHANCED-IR Satellite Image 10:30 p.m., 02 December 2012.
“Good weather is still expected for the whole country on Monday. On Tuesday, the effects of Bopha will be gradually felt over the eastern section of Mindanao,” Sawi said in a press briefing.  He said heavy rain is expected over Surigao, Compostela Valley, Davao and the rest of Mindanao tomorrow morning, and over Northern Mindanao by nighttime.  By Wednesday, the typhoon is expected to cross Panay Island and move toward the Mindoro-Palawan area.  “By Thursday evening, Bopha will be over Palawan and will start to bring light to moderate rain over Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon,” Sawi said.

‘Super typhoon’
Bopha was categorized by US meteorologists as a super typhoon. As of 4 p. m. yesterday, the eye of the typhoon was spotted 970 kilometers southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur with maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 220 kph. It was forecast to move west-northwest at 22 kph.  This morning, it is forecast to be at 660 km east of Hinatuan, and by tomorrow at 140 km east northeast of Hinatuan or 230 km east-southeast of Surigao City.  By Wednesday morning the weather disturbance is expected to be at 60 km north of Dumaguete City. It was predicted to bring 20 to 30 millimeters of rain (heavy to intense) in areas within its 700-km radius.

Landslide, storm surge alerts up
Benito Ramos, executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), advised fishermen in the eastern section of the country, particularly in Surigao del Sur and Surigao del Norte, not to venture to sea.  He warned residents in coastal areas against storm surges and workers of small-scale mining companies in Mt. Diwalwal, Compostela Valley against possible landslides.  The NDRRMC also ordered its field units to undertake precautionary measures.  “This is a powerful storm, perhaps the strongest this year, and we enjoin everyone to take precautionary measures,” Ramos said.  He said the local governments would determine whether to undertake preemptive evacuation in their respective areas. He advised residents to cooperate with local authorities to minimize casualties. - PHIL Star.

2012, "GALACTIC ZERO BAND": Doomsday or Golden Age - Tibetan Monk, the Oracle of Shambhala Says the "Cosmic Dark" Apocalypse Will Last Two Weeks in December, Spiritual Awakening of Mankind in 2013!

December 02, 2012 - TIBET - If you believe the predictions of the Maya, before the apocalypse less than two months. And although scientists, as they should be, are loath to believe in the absurd predictions, astrologers and soothsayers are seriously discussing what will be the designated end of the world. So, Tibetan lamas do not hide the fact that the risk of a serious accident is quite large: in late December, the Solar system planets line up in a row, which is a unique case. In his message to NASA lama monastery Gyandrek under Kailas, known as the Oracle of Shambhala, said that on December 21 2012, the Earth, along with the solar system passes through the galactic “zero band” writes

“Fall and winter will be warm, and from 12/21/2012 Earth will begin to pass through the galactic” zero band. “This is a special state space where the blanked and not be subject to any energy. Was complete darkness and silence. The electricity and communications. Darkness will be accompanied by flashes of light, as well as the play of light and shadow. Sometimes it may seem that roam figures – as if the dead rose from their graves. earth will shake slightly – like a small earthquake. Some buildings can be destroyed “- warned Lama. “Animals feel the earth before the coming of the” cosmic dark “and go to ground – said the monk. – People in cities do not feel so are the victims of insanity. Can be lost 10% of the population. “

Oracle Shambhala painted and practical recommendations for humans:
1. You need to prepare for this change of cycles to complete all the works in 2012, not to tie new, pay off debts.

2. 20.12.2012 to take their children, all documents, cash and get out of town into the countryside. Prepare a supply of food for two months, as supply will be restored for a long time.

3. It is necessary to have in the house supply of water, firewood and candles for lighting. You need to have the stove in the house, as the electricity stops flowing from 21.12.2012 on the wire.

4. Communications and TV are turned off. During the “dark days” hang windows dark, not to look at them, do not believe your eyes and ears, not to go out. If you see the need to go, you can not go far – you can get lost, as you’ll even his own hands.

5. After the appearance of the world is not in a hurry to return to the city, it is better to live in the nature of spring.

Disasters according to Tibetan lamas will last two weeks, though the echoes will be felt for some months until the beginning of February. The total yield of the Earth from the “zero band”, expected in about February 7, 2013. There will be a partial restoration of electricity, transport. By late March, the world will recover completely. End of the world will radically change the outlook of people, according to Oracle Shambhala. It will become more spiritual. In developed and developing countries will blossom variety of scientific and spiritual teachings, systems development and health of the individual. “This will be the most important impetus to the progress of mankind for a long time,” – concludes the monk. Meanwhile, scientists continue to claim that the fears of the apocalypse are unfounded. “New evidence suggests that the ancient Maya did apocalyptic prophecies” – quoted by words of the director of the Research Institute of Central America Marcello Canuto. Many researchers Maya agree that their civilization, if it existed today, most likely, would have invented a new calendar. Archaeologists have found evidence of even deep in the rain forest texts in which the ancient Maya mentioned dates later than December 21, 2012, marks referring to Discovery. - ISP.

TERMINATOR NOW: The Rise of the Machines - From Sci-Fi to Reality, the Computer-Blitzing Drone That Can Cripple a Nation's Electronics at the Touch of a Button!

December 02, 2012 - UNITED STATES - Down the years and across the universe, the heroes of science-fiction classics from Dan Dare to Star Wars and The Matrix have fought intergalactic battles with weapons that wipe out enemy electronics at the touch of a button.  Now scientists have turned fantasy into reality by developing a missile that targets buildings with microwaves that disable computers but don’t harm people.  Aircraft manufacturer Boeing successfully tested the weapon on a one-hour flight during which  it knocked out the computers of an entire military compound in the Utah desert.  It is thought the missile could  penetrate the bunkers and caves believed to be hiding Iran’s suspected nuclear facilities. But experts have warned that, in the wrong hands, the technology could be used to bring Western cities such as London to their knees.  During Boeing’s experiment, the missile flew low over the Utah Test and Training Range, discharging  electromagnetic pulses on to seven targets, permanently shutting down their electronics.

Pre-programmed flightpath: Aircraft manufacturer Boeing has successfully tested a missile
which knocked out an entire military compound in the Utah desert.
Boeing said that the test was so successful even the camera recording it was disabled.  Codenamed the Counter-Electronics High Power Microwave Advanced Missile Project (CHAMP), it is the first time a missile with electromagnetic pulse capability has been tested.  For security reasons, Boeing declined to release film of the test, but instead issued an artist’s impression of it on video. In the clip, a stealth aircraft deploys a missile that emits radio waves from its undercarriage which knock out the computer systems inside the buildings below.  The company did release real film showing a row of computers that can be seen shutting down when the electromagnetic pulse is switched on.   Although the project is shrouded in secrecy, experts believe the missile is equipped with an electromagnetic pulse cannon. This uses a super-powerful microwave oven to generate a concentrated beam of energy which causes voltage surges in electronic equipment, rendering them useless before surge protectors have the chance to react.  Keith Coleman, CHAMP programme manager for Boeing’s  prototype arm Phantom Works, said the technology marked ‘a new era in modern warfare’.

Stealth mission: The missile is launched from a stealth bomber and is thought to be able to penetrate the bunkers
and caves believe to be hiding Iran's suspected nuclear facilities.
He added: ‘In the near future, this technology may be used to render an enemy’s electronic and data  systems useless even before the first troops or aircraft arrive.   ‘We hit every target we wanted and made science fiction into science fact. When the computers went out, it actually took out the cameras as well. It was fantastic.’  The project has cost £24 million and has been developed on behalf of the US Air Force Research Laboratory following a request from the Pentagon four years ago.  Lead test engineer Peter Finlay said: ‘We’re not quite at the place where the Star Trek and Star Wars movies are but this is definitely  an advancement in technology  able to give us an opportunity to  do things we could not do before.’ James Dodd, vice-president of Advanced Boeing Military Aircraft, said there was a real need for  a weapon that could knock out a  target but not cause harm to people and structures.  He said: ‘We know this has capabilities and impact. We’re trying to see if we can get it implemented sooner rather than later.’  However, experts fear that  the project could create an arms race, with countries scrambling to build their own electromagnetic pulse weapons.  Professor Trevor Taylor, Professorial Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, said the Western world would be much more vulnerable to such an attack because of our increased reliance on electronics. He added: ‘This is a challenging area in political and military terms. Ideally there would have been an arms-control agreement to cover this field, because once technology is actually developed, control becomes harder.  ‘The historical record shows  that important technologies developed in one country are developed elsewhere within a relatively short period – look what happened with regard to the USSR and  nuclear weapons.   ‘Should the US be known to have developed such a technology to the production stage, it would drive  others to try to act similarly.  ‘Western countries are more dependent on electronics-based IT than others and would be vulnerable to extensive disruption.’ - Daily Mail.

EXTRATERRESTRIAL & UFO MEMES: National UFO Alert - Six States Report 218 UFO Sighting Cases in November!

December 02, 2012 - UNITED STATES - The National UFO ALERT Rating System has been updated December 1, 2012, with California, Florida, Michigan, Texas, Pennsylvania, and Arizona moving to a UFO Alert 3 as the highest reporting states during the month of November 2012, filed with the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). California was the leading high-reporting state in November with 53 cases, down from 83 cases in October, 69 cases filed in September and 75 in August.

Those states in a UFO Alert 4 category with 13 or more reports include: Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, North Carolina, Tennessee, Colorado and New York.  All other states move to a UFO Alert 5 category with lower numbers of UFO activity. The Watch States - with 10 or more cases - are Georgia, Washington, New Jersey and Indiana.  MUFON released November statistics December 1, where the total number of reported UFO sightings is listed by state. The UFO Examiner uses these statistics to rate states. The entire country was moved back to the lowest alert level - UFO Alert 5.  California takes the lead with 53 cases; Florida, 37; Michigan, 37; Texas, 36; Pennsylvania, 30; Arizona, 25 cases.  Those states with 13 or more reports, the next reporting tier level, are a UFO Alert 4 status: Ohio, 22; Missouri, 21; Illinois, 20; North Carolina, 16; Tennessee, 16; Colorado, 15; and New York, 14.  Our Watch States this month are - with 10 reports or more: Georgia, 12; Washington, 12; New Jersey, 11; and Indiana, 10 cases.

The sphere remains the most-reported UFO shape with 168 November reports; down from 161 in October, 246 in September and 238 August reports. Other shape reports include: Circle, 117; Triangle, 100 (up from 81 September reports); Fireball, 83; Star-like, 82; Other, 75; Disc, 71; Unknown, 67; Oval, 58; Cylinder, 33; Boomerang, 32; Flash, 29; Square/Rectangle, 22; Cigar, 18; Teardrop, 15; Cone, 12; Diamond, 12; Bullet/Missile, 10; Egg, 9; Blimp, 8; Chevron, 8; Saturn-like, 4; and Cross, 1.  The object's distance from the witness includes: Less than 100 feet, 57 cases; 101 to 500 feet, 85 cases; 501 feet to one mile, 138 cases; over one mile, 160 cases; unknown, 200; and no value stated, 16.  In addition, there were "22 landings, hovering, or takeoffs reported and 0 entities observed."  The most interesting UFO reports do not necessarily come from high reporting states - but those states with higher numbers do account for some of the most interesting evidence to study. While UFO sightings seem to pop up randomly around the country, this list is meant to offer a small insight into where Americans are filing reports. - Roger Marsh / Examiner.

CELESTIAL CONVERGENCE: Fire in the Sky - NASA Tries to Battle Pervasive Rumors of Nibiru and 2012 Apocalypse!

December 02, 2012 - NASA -  Astronomers fear the dark side of apocalyptic rumors. NASA scientists have been debunking pseudoscience and fantasy about the Mayan apocalypse partially because they worry frightened teens might commit suicide over the hoax. “There are literally millions of people who are afraid — who think the world will end,” said David Morrison, an astrobiologist at NASA Ames Research Center. One particularly pervasive rumor concerns a fictitious planet, which Sumerians supposedly discovered, called Nibiru. On its current orbit, the fictional planet is slated to crash into Earth on Dec. 21, this year’s winter solstice, according to the hoax.

NASA astronomers have set out to debunk end of the world rumors connected to the Mayan calendar.
Belief in such theories could have tragic real-world consequences, scientists say.
Some people are so worried about the supposedly impending apocalypse that they cannot sleep or eat. Others have even started contemplating suicide as a way to avoid the chaos of end times, according to Morrison. "While this is a joke to some people and a mystery to others, there is a core of people who are truly concerned," said Morrison. "While this is a joke to some people and a mystery to others, there is a core of people who are truly concerned," said Morrison. On behalf of NASA, Morrison routinely answers scientific inquiries submitted by the public. However, over the last few years, legitimate questions have been “overwhelmed” by questions about a 2012 doomsday.

Morrison claims to have received many letters and emails from anxious people but he is particularly concerned about the effect end-of-days rumors might have on young people. "I think it's evil for people to propagate rumors on the Internet to frighten children," said Morrison. Nibiru was originally predicted to collide with Earth in May 2003 but when that month came and went without cataclysm, doomsday prophets pushed the date back to December 2012. This move linked the suspected catastrophe with the end of a cycle in the ancient Mayan calendar, according to NASA. NASA scientists emphasize that there is no basis for this claim. If a planet were heading toward Earth, astronomers would have started tracking it at least a decade ago. People would also be able to view it with the naked eye. It would, in fact, be the brightest object in the sky after the sun and moon. “You can dispel this rumor yourself. You don’t have to ask the government or ask scientists. Just go out and look at the sky. You will find no new bright object heading for the Earth,” Morris said. - NY Daily News.

STORM ALERT: Water Logged Northern California Braces For Another Powerful Storm - Third Major Weather System in Recent Days, Heavy Rains and Widespread Flooding Expected!

December 02, 2012 - UNITED STATES - Residents of Northern California braced for flooding as another powerful storm brings heavy rains to a region already soaked by two major weather systems in recent days.   The latest storm came ashore Saturday night and was expected to force several rivers over their banks as it saturates the region Sunday, National Weather Service forecasters said.   With rivers and streams already running high, the weather service issued flood warnings for both the Napa and Russian rivers, two rivers north of San Francisco with a history of flooding.   "Some roads will become inundated and some of the agricultural areas will take on some water," said Mark Strudley, a hydrologist with the weather service.

The Napa River was expected to flood near St. Helena and Napa around noon on Sunday, while the Russian River was expected to flood near Guerneville early Monday morning, Strudley said.   The Napa River overwhelmed downtown Napa in 2005, flooding or destroying about 1,000 homes and forcing thousands of residents to leave the area. With that in mind, residents worked to fill 700 bags with 10 tons of sand, city official Danny Lerma said.   "When you see it happen, you always remember, and you say, 'I'm going to be better prepared,'" Lerma told KGO-TV. "And that's what they're doing right now."  Farther north, forecasters said the Truckee River near Lake Tahoe was expected to crest above flood level by Sunday morning. The threat of flooding prompted officials in Truckee, a small town of about 16,000, to set up an evacuation center.

A flash flood watch was also in effect for a wide area of Northern California through Sunday evening.   Just across the border in Nevada, a state of emergency was declared in Reno, Sparks and Washoe County due to the expected flooding. The weather also prompted cancellations of Christmas parades and tree lightings in Sparks and Truckee.   Officials were also warning people to be careful along beaches. A high surf advisory was issued by the weather service, with swells expected to be 14 to 16 feet along the Northern California coast.  In Southern California, high surf was predicted in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties.   In San Diego, the Ocean Beach Municipal Pier was closed because of big waves and high tides.   At the peak of Friday's storm, some flooding was reported and thousands of people in Northern California were without power.   The stormy weather may be behind a crash that involved several cars on Interstate 280 outside of San Francisco on Saturday morning, as well as the death of a Pacific Gas & Electric worker in West Sacramento who was killed after his truck crashed into a traffic signal pole during the stormy weather Friday. - NBC News.

GEOLOGICAL UPHEAVAL: Tunnel Collapses Near Mt. Fuji Volcano, Japan - Five Dead, Seven Missing, Many Vehicles Buried Under the Rubble!

December 02, 2012 - JAPAN - A man who fled with his wife and children from a collapsed Japanese tunnel in which at least five people died spoke Sunday of how he had been unable to get anyone out of a crushed and burning vehicle.  Tomohiro Suzuki said the nearly five-kilometre (three mile)-long tunnel, passing through hills near Mount Fuji, had been the scene of confusion as cars drove the wrong way to try to escape the cave-in and ensuing fire.  At least five people are known to have died after being trapped inside their burning vehicle on one of Japan's most important highways.

Japan rescue workers and police gather outside the Sasago tunnel along the Chuo highway near Otsuki in Yamanashi prefecture after part of the tunnel collapsed. Japanese rescuers found several charred bodies in the highway tunnel that collapsed early in the day, crushing cars and triggering a blaze, and sparking fears of another cave-in.

Officials had said at least seven people were missing.  Other vehicles were believed to have been buried when the 20-centimetre- (eight-inch)-thick concrete roof panels caved in on the Tokyo-bound side of the Sasago tunnel, around 80 kilometres (50 miles) from the capital.  Suzuki, 37, said he had jumped out of his car and rushed towards a vehicle that had been crushed by the fallen concrete in a bid to rescue people inside.  "A part of the ceiling, just as wide as the road, had collapsed straight down and broken in the middle into a V-shape," he told Jiji Press.  He told the agency there was a fire in its bonnet, but he could find no way in.  "I called the police as I thought it was impossible for me to rescue anyone inside."  "I could hear after a while on the public address system that a fire has occurred inside the tunnel and the sprinkler system was going to be activated."

Suzuki said people in the tunnel were in panic, with cars starting to drive the wrong way to try to get out.  He gathered up his 38-year-old wife, Nishiki, and their two children, six and nine, and hurried them to safety as several dozen people rushed to get out.  "I was anxious as I could not see the exit," he said.  "I kept wondering when the fire would spread and catch us. I tried to let my children get away first of all."  Suzuki, from central Nagano prefecture, said it had taken him and his family about an hour to get out of the tunnel. By the time they got out, the fire had established itself and they could see smoke coming from the tunnel mouth.  A search-and-rescue operation, which swung into operation shortly after the collapse at around 8 am (2300 GMT Saturday), was temporarily halted when engineers said there was a risk of a secondary cave-in.  But by late afternoon it had been resumed, with teams of rescuers, along with heavy equipment, including car transporters, sent back inside the tunnel.  Footage from security cameras nearly ten hours after the collapse showed large concrete panels still sitting in the V shape that Suzuki described, with men in protective gear scrambling over the top of them.  Broadcasters said they were working to get to at least one vehicle underneath the debris.  At the tunnel mouth, dozens of emergency service workers milled around. A number of tents had been set up, with crews apparently using them to co-ordinate their work. - Channel News Asia.

GLOBAL VOLCANISM: The Volcano Activity Report For December 01st, 2012!

December 02, 2012 - WORLDWIDE VOLCANOES - The following constitutes the new activity, unrest and ongoing report from geologist Richard Wilson who specializes in volcano seismicity and Armand Vervaeck.

Exhalations at Popocatepetl volcano have dropped to less than one per hour the past 24 hours.  The Popocatepetl seismogram shows some low-level voclanic tremor and a few small earthquakes.

Seismicity at Pacaya volcano (Guatemala) (station PCG) also consists of small volcanic earthquakes intersperses with a few pulses of tremor.

Upon a closer look at yesterday’s Santa Maria seismogram and the one recorded today (station STG6), I don’t believe most of spikes on each record are in fact “clone” earthquakes, rather they appear to be some sort of electronic (seismometer?, amplifier?, telemetry?) issue.  Otherwise, the volcano is exhibiting continuous, relatively low-level volcanic tremor.  Seismicity at the volcano has in fact been lower than what we’ve seen for several weeks now.

Tremor at Masaya volcano (Nicaragua) (station MASN) continues to run a little hot, but still no reports of any unusual surface activity at the volcano.

A swarm of small earthquakes struck Machin volcano (Colombia) (station CIMA) in the past day. Small earthquakes (and some tremor) are also apparent on seismograms at Galeras volcano (station ANGV).

Periods of heightened seismic (and eruptive) activity alternate with relative quiet at Reventador volcano (Ecuador) (station CONE).

Numerous small earthquakes and volcanic tremor mix with “noise” produced by a passing weather system on today’s seismogram from Ruapehu volcano (New Zealand).  The same storm is producing “noise’ on the seismic record from Tongariro volcano.  To the north, White Island continues to quiver with volcanic tremor.

Recent satellite imagery still does not clearly show an eruptive plume from ongoing activity at Plosky Tolbachik (Kamchatka). This is likely due to the lack of stratospheric injection (greater than 20,000 ft asl) by the eruption.

Elsewhere, weak plumes were identified over Popocatepetl, and Nyiragongo (DRC) volcanoes.  Relatively strong SO2 plume production was evident at Ambrym volcano (Vanuatu), and for the second consecutive day, an SO2 plume is identified over Uluwan volcano (New Guinea). - EarthQuake Report.
