The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirm that no tsunami threat is in place. Therefore, no destructive widespread tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data. No word of damage or expanded threat has been issued at this time.

However, earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter. Authorities in the region of the epicenter should be aware of this possibility and take appropriate action.

The South Sandwich region is bounded by the South American American Plate and the Antarctic Plate.

The islands comprise 11 mostly volcanic islands (excluding tiny satellite islands and offshore rocks), with some active volcanoes. They form an island arc running north-south in the region 56°18′–59°27′S, 26°23′–28°08′W, between about 350 miles (560 km) and 500 miles (800 km) southeast of South Georgia.

The northernmost of the South Sandwich Islands form the Traversay Islands and Candlemas Islands groups, while the southernmost make up Southern Thule. The three largest islands – Saunders, Montagu and Bristol – lie between the two. The Islands’ highest point is Mount Belinda (1,370 m/4,495 ft) on Montagu Island.

GLOBAL VOLCANISM: The Volcano Report For March 10, 2014 - Updates On Etna, Popocatépetl, Pacaya, Fuego And San Miguel!

March 10, 2014 - WORLDWIDE VOLCANOES - The following constitutes the new activity, unrest and ongoing reports of volcanoes across the globe.

Etna (Sicily, Italy): While weak lava effusion and sporadic strombolian explosions from the New SE crater continue with little changes, the Bocca Nuova crater has started to produce occasional small ash emissions of sometimes elevated temperature (suggesting presence of magma near the surface).

RATTLE & HUM: Did You Hear The Boom - Loud And Mysterious Noise Over Illinois Rattle Residents?!

March 10, 2014 - ILLINOIS, UNITED STATES - Viewers have called, emailed and sent Facebook messages to our newsroom questioning where this boom noise came from. TV-6 spoke with people on both sides of the river--from Davenport to Rock Island. We don't know much about where the noise came from, but some of you say you heard it.

"I heard a really loud boom," said Chris Rice.

"I heard a rumble," said Tanisha Douglas.

" I heard a pretty big explosion," said Logan Edwards.

A noise so loud that some of you say it startled you and caused your homes and businesses to shake.

"I expected to see a mushroom cloud when I went out there off in the distance," said Rice.

We contacted the police and fire departments, airport, the Rock Island Arsenal and even spoke with our meteorologist about what it could be, but no one knows.

"I haven't heard anything that loud since leaving Iraq in 2007," said Edwards.

WATCH: Did you hear the boom?

"It sounded like something really big on the street. Like something rolling by on the street and then there was a rumble, too," said Douglas

Whether the noise was a rumble, explosion or boom, some of you tell us, this isn't the first time you've heard it.

"On January 14th I heard the sound," said Rice. "I'm used to hearing really loud sounds because I live near the river. I hear trains, barges. I've always lived near the arsenal. I hear all types of sounds, but this one was way louder."

The mystery remains unsolved....

FIRE IN THE SKY: Irish Skies Lit Up By "Extremely Bright" Fireball - Many Reports Of Saturday Night Meteor, Astronomy Ireland Says!

March 10, 2014 - IRELAND - An 'extremely bright fireball' was seen streaking across Irish skies on Saturday night before breaking up, Astronomy Ireland has said.

A fireball which burned up over Russia last February generated shockwaves which circled the globe twice.

The organisation received "lots of reports" of sightings of the meteor which lit up the sky shortly after 9.30pm.

"Fireballs are seen quite rarely, but when they appear on a clear evening when people are travelling from work we often get inundated with reports," said astronomy Ireland chairman David Moore.

Reports from the public help to "determine the fireball's path through the sky and find out if it is likely to have ended up on land or in the sea,"Mr Moore said.

Fireballs are very bright meteors caused by larger particles of debris from space, Astronomy Ireland said. They can seem close but occur " very high up in the atmosphere, approximately 70km and above", it said.

They disintegrate at altitudes over 50km and occasionally fragments survive and fall to earth, it said. It urged anyone who saw the fireball to report sightings at In February last year a fireball burned up over Russia and generated shockwaves which circled the globe twice.

The asteroid on February 15th broke up above the city of Chelyabinsk about 1,500km east of Moscow leaving more than 1,000 people injured. The event's shockwaves blew out windows and damaged buildings in several cities.

It was 17 metres in diameter when it entered the atmosphere and travelled over Russia at a speed of about 20km/second. - Irish Times.

GLOBAL ECONOMIC MELTDOWN: Precursors To A Global Financial Collapse - Did Ukraine Just Airlift Its ENTIRE GOLD HOARD To The U.S. Federal Reserve?!

March 10, 2014 - GLOBAL ECONOMY - Today an outspoken hedge fund manager out of Hong Kong stunned King World News when he said that the entire Ukrainian gold hoard may have just secretly been flown from Ukraine to the United States.

William Kaye, who 25 years ago worked for Goldman Sachs in mergers and acquisitions, also spoke about the incredible implications of this astonishing development.  Below is what Kaye had to say in this powerful interview.

Kaye:  “There are now reports coming from Ukraine that all of the Ukrainian gold has been airlifted, at 2 AM Ukrainian time, out of the main airport, Boryspil Airport, in Kiev, and is being flown to New York -- the presumable destination being the New York Fed....

“Now that’s 33 tons of gold which is worth somewhere between $1.5 billion - $2 billion.  That would amount to a very nice down payment to the $5 billion that Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland boasted that the United States has already spent in their efforts to destabilize Ukraine, and put in place their own unelected  government.”

Eric King:  “Whether the United States is taking down Saddam Hussein in Iraq, or Muammar Gaddafi in Libya, there always seems to be gold at the end of the rainbow, which the U.S. then appropriates.”

Kaye:  “That’s a good point, Eric.  The United States installed a former banker in Ukraine who is very friendly to the West.  He is also a guy with central bank experience.  This would have been his first major decision to transport that gold out of Ukraine to the United States.

You may recall that allegedly the logistical requirements prevented the New York Fed from returning the 300 tons of gold the United States stores for Germany back to Germany.  After a year of waiting, the New York Fed only sent Germany 5 tons of gold.  So only 5 tons of gold was sent from the Fed to Germany, and it wasn’t even the 5 tons that had been originally stored with the Fed.

Even the Bundesbank has admitted that the gold sent to them by the New York Fed had to be melted down and tested for purity because it wasn’t Germany’s original bars.  So how is it, since logistical requirements are supposedly such a major issue, that in one airlift, assuming this report is accurate, all the gold Ukraine possessed in their vault was taken out of Ukraine and delivered to the New York Fed?

I think anybody with any active brain cells knows that just like Germany, Ukraine will have to wait a very long time, and very likely will never see that gold again.  Meaning, that gold is gone.” - KWN.

PLANETARY TREMORS: One Of The Largest Earthquakes To Hit California In Decades - Produces Dozens Of Aftershocks, With More Expected In Coming Days; Chance Of LARGER QUAKE In The Same Area Next Week!

March 10, 2014 - CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES -  One of the largest earthquakes to hit California in decades rattled the state's northern coast, but its depth and distance from shore reduced the impact on land, where there were no reports of injuries or damage, scientists and authorities said on Monday.

The magnitude-6.8 quake struck at 10:18 p.m. PDT Sunday and was centered 50 miles west of Eureka and about 10 miles beneath the Pacific seabed, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was initially reported as a magnitude-6.9, but later downgraded.
By late Monday morning, it had already produced 20 aftershocks of magnitude-3.5 or larger, and more were expected over the coming days, said Keith Knudsen, deputy director of the USGS's Earthquake Science Center in Menlo Park, Calif.

Knudsen said there was also a 5 to 10 percent chance of a larger quake in the area in the next week.

Sunday's quake was felt widely across the region, but both fire and sheriff's officials in Humboldt County said they had no reports of any damage or injuries. Humboldt County includes most of the populated areas closest to the epicenter.

"Everybody felt it region-wide to the point that there was concern for damage," said Humboldt County Sheriff's Lt. Steve Knight. But other than triggering some home alarms, the county escaped unharmed, he said. "We're very grateful."

There was no tsunami danger for the region as well, according to the National Tsunami Warning Center.
More than 3,000 people reported on the USGS website that they felt the quake within hours of it striking, including some across the border in Oregon.

"It was a big bump and then it rolled for about 30 seconds," said Diana Harralson, 64, who lives in an apartment in Rio Dell, about 55 miles southeast of the earthquake's epicenter. "It was a real good shaker."

Harralson said some knickknacks fell off the wall, but there was no damage. A California native who has experienced other earthquakes, she said she and her cat slept comfortably through the night.

Amandip Heer, a manager at a 76 Gas Station and convenience store in Eureka, described the quake as a "vibration," but said nothing fell off the shelves at the store, and there was no other damage.

Earthquakes are very common in Eureka, a city of about 27,000 people about 270 miles northwest of San Francisco and 100 miles south of the Oregon state line. Nearby Arcata is home to about 17,000 people and Humboldt State University.

WATCH: Magnitude 6.9 earthquake hits California region.

Since 1980, there have been 10 earthquakes greater than magnitude-6 in the area, Knudsen said. California has experienced at least seven earthquakes of magnitude-6.9 over the same period, according to the USGS.

Sunday's quake was far enough from shore to allow much of its energy to dissipate, Knudsen said.

"We're fortunate it didn't strike closer to a populated area," he said.

An offshore earthquake of magnitude-7.2 about 30 miles southwest of Eureka in 1992 left 95 people injured and caused tens of millions of dollars in damage, according to the USGS. The earthquake was felt as far south as San Francisco.

It was followed by a magnitude-6.5 earthquake about 12 hours later and a magnitude-6.7 earthquake a few hours after that, both of which caused additional damage. - Yahoo.

GLOBAL ECONOMIC MELTDOWN: Precursors To A Global Financial Collapse - Global Debt Exceeds $100 TRILLION As Governments Binge, Bank For International Settlements Says!

March 10, 2014 - GLOBAL ECONOMY - The amount of debt globally has soared more than 40 percent to $100 trillion since the first signs of the financial crisis as governments borrowed to pull their economies out of recession and companies took advantage of record low interest rates, according to the Bank for International Settlements.

The $30 trillion increase from $70 trillion between mid-2007 and mid-2013 compares with a $3.86 trillion decline in the value of equities to $53.8 trillion in the same period, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The jump in debt as measured by the Basel, Switzerland-based BIS in its quarterly review is almost twice the U.S.’s gross domestic product.

Borrowing has soared as central banks suppress benchmark interest rates to spur growth after the U.S. subprime mortgage market collapsed and Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.’s bankruptcy sent the world into its worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. Yields on all types of bonds, from governments to corporates and mortgages, average about 2 percent, down from more than 4.8 percent in 2007, according to the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global Broad Market Index.

“Given the significant expansion in government spending in recent years, governments (including central, state and local governments) have been the largest debt issuers,” according to Branimir Gruic, an analyst, and Andreas Schrimpf, an economist at the BIS. The organization is owned by 60 central banks and hosts the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, a group of regulators and central bankers that sets global capital standards.

Austerity Measures

Marketable U.S. government debt outstanding has surged to a record $12 trillion, up from $4.5 trillion at the end of 2007, according to U.S. Treasury data compiled by Bloomberg. Corporate bond sales globally jumped during the period, with issuance totaling more than $21 trillion, Bloomberg data show.

Concerned that high debt loads would cause international investors to avoid their markets, many nations resorted to austerity measures of reduced spending and increased taxes, reining in their economies in the process as they tried to restore the fiscal order they abandoned to fight the worldwide recession.

Adjusting budgets to ignore interest payments, the International Monetary Fund said late last year that the so-called primary deficit in the Group of Seven countries reached an average 5.1 percent in 2010 when also smoothed to ignore large economic swings. The measure will fall to 1.2 percent this year, the IMF predicted.

The unprecedented retrenchments between 2010 and 2013 amounted to 3.5 percent of U.S. gross domestic product and 3.3 percent of euro-area GDP, according to Julian Callow, chief international economist at Barclays Plc in London.

The riskiest to the most-creditworthy bonds have returned more than 31 percent since 2007, according to Bank of America Merrill Lynch index data. Treasury and agency debt handed investors gains of 27 percent in the period, while corporate bonds worldwide returned more than 40 percent, the indexes show. - Bloomberg.

CLIMATE CHANGE: "This Is Very Worrying" - Scientists Find New Ozone-Depleting Gases In Atmosphere!

March 10, 2014 - OZONE LAYER - Worried scientists said Sunday they had found four new ozone-destroying gases in the atmosphere, most likely put there by humans in the last 50-odd years despite a ban on these dangerous compounds.

A false-color view of total ozone over the Antarctic pole is seen in this NASA handout image released October 24, 2012. (Reuters/NASA)

It is the first time since the 1990s that new substances damaging to Earth's stratospheric shield have been found, and others may be out there, they said.

"Our research has shown four gases that were not around in the atmosphere at all until the 1960s, which suggests they are man-made," the team from Europe and Australia wrote in the journal Nature Geoscience.

They analysed unpolluted air samples collected in Tasmania between 1978 and 2012, and from deep, compacted snow in Greenland.

"The identification of these four new gases is very worrying as they will contribute to the destruction of the ozone layer," added a statement from the team.

"We don't know where the new gases are being emitted from, and this should be investigated."

Three of the gases are chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) -- a group which includes chemicals traditionally found in air-conditioning, refrigerators and aerosol spray cans but banned under the Montreal Protocol.

The fourth is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC), part of a closely-related group of compounds which replaced CFCs but are being phased out.

More than 74,000 tonnes of the four newly-identified gases had accumulated in the atmosphere by 2012, said the team.

This is very small compared with peak emissions of CFCs in the 1980s of more than a million tonnes per year.

- Riddle of the source -

"However, the reported emissions are clearly contrary to the intentions behind the Montreal Protocol, and raise questions about the sources of these gases," the team wrote.

Two of the gases, one CFC and the HCFC, are still accumulating.

Previously, seven types of CFC and six of HCFC were known to contribute to ozone destruction.

CFCs, the main cause of the hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica, are man-made organic compounds made of carbon, chlorine and fluorine.

They were phased out from 1989, followed by a total ban in 2010.

HCFCs, CFC-like compounds which also include one or more hydrogen atoms, are less ozone-damaging but contribute to climate change by trapping more of the Sun's heat in the atmosphere.

The ozone layer comprises triple-atom oxygen molecules that are spread thinly in the stratosphere.

It plays a vital role in protecting life by filtering out ultraviolet rays that can damage vegetation and cause skin cancer.

In high latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere, where the ozone layer is damaged or subject to seasonal fluctuations, people are advised to cover exposed skin and wear sunglasses.

(Pool/AFP/File, Michael Kappeler)

Possible sources for the new gases include chemicals used for insecticide production and solvents for cleaning electronic components, said the researchers.

Concentration differences between the samples suggested the dominant source was in the industrialised Northern Hemisphere, they added.

Study co-author Johannes Laube from the University of East Anglia's School of Environmental Sciences said the ozone layer stopped thinning from the late 1990s and there were signs of it starting to recover.

"As many ODSs [ozone-depleting substances], and especially CFCs, take a long time to break down once released into the atmosphere, it will be many decades until it will fully recover," he told AFP.

"Provided we do not have further unpleasant surprises."

Martyn Chipperfield, a professor of atmospheric chemistry at the University of Leeds in northern England, said the low concentrations of the four gases "do not present concern at the moment."

But, he added, "the fact that these gases are in the atmosphere and some are increasing needs investigation." - AFP.

PLANETARY TREMORS: Powerful 6.9 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Northern California Coast - No Destructive Tsunami Warning!

March 10, 2014 - CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES - A powerful magnitude-6.9 earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California Sunday night, the U.S. Geological Service reported.

The epicenter was 48 miles west-northwest of Ferndale and 50 miles west of Eureka at a depth of 4.3 miles, the USGS said.

The quake, which occurred at 10:18 p.m. PT (1:18 a.m ET), was initially reported as magnitude 6.1 on the Richter scale, but seismologists revised it upward to 6.9.

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Department, which oversees most of the nearby populated areas, said it had received no calls about damage or injuries, the AP reported.

The probability of a "strong and possibly damaging aftershock" of magnitude 5.0 or greater in the next seven days was 90 percent, the USGS warned, adding that there was a 5 percent to 10 percent of another quake as large as or larger than the initial one in the next week.

No destructive tsunami was expected, and no tsunami advisory was issued, The West Coast/Alaska and Pacific Tsunami Warning Centers said.

According to the USGS, the quake was felt over a large swath of the North Coast as well as other parts of Northern California. The shaking was felt as far south as the Bay Area and as far north as Oregon.

There have also been several smaller quakes that are believed to be aftershocks in the ocean off Eureka.

Eureka police have told several Northern California media outlets that the department has no immediate reports of injuries or major damage.

A resident of Ferndale near Eureka described it as a "long slow quake," according to CBS San Francisco. He said the power remained on and no books fell off the shelves.

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Department also said it has not received any reports of injuries.

The USGS classified the shaking on land to be light to moderate.
The North Coast is considered seismically active and experiences large temblors with some regularity.

A 6.5 quake hit the area in 2010, snapping power lines, toppling chimneys, knocking down traffic signals, shattering windows and prompting the evacuation of at least one apartment building.

In 1964, the 8.8 earthquake in Alaska caused catastrophic damage on the North Coast.

The March 28 tsunami killed 11 in Crescent City and destroyed the city's business districts. Accounts from the time reported that fuel tanks erupted in flames while cars and trucks washed down city streets, pilling up against building.
