36 stranded pilot whales die in New Zealand

About 36 pilot whales that had become stranded in the Eastern Bay of Plenty in New Zealand have died.

Two whale pods beached themselves in the Ohiwa harbour on the north-east coast on Monday.

Wildlife conservationists launched a rescue operation and helped one pod to be refloated on Tuesday, while 21 more whales were successfully herded out to sea on Wednesday.

The reasons for mass pilot whale strandings are not well understood.

Pilot whales are particularly prone to stranding behaviour. The largest known pilot whale stranding involved an estimated 1,000 whales at the Chatham Islands in 1918, according to the DOC.

Steve Brightwell from the DOC said the whales came into Ohiwa harbour after one of them was unwell and beached itself, reported Radio New Zealand.

Eleven of the whales were euthanized on welfare grounds on Tuesday, the Department of Conservation (DOC) said. About 25 pilot whales were found dead early Wednesday morning.

At about 05:00 local time on Wednesday (16:00 GMT Tuesday) volunteer medics from Project Jonah, a non-profit organisation, along with the DOC began an operation to guide those whales that were still alive back out to sea.
"We did it! All 22 whales were shepherded through the mouth of the harbour to the ocean and were last seen heading towards deeper water," Project Jonah said on Facebook.

New Zealand on average has more whales stranding themselves than any other country in the world, Daren Grover, general manager of Project Jonah told the BBC.

"It's something we have lived with and we are quite geared up to respond to," he said.

Scientists believe individual whales strand themselves because they have a disease and are coming to the end of their life.

However, there are numerous theories around mass stranding including their highly sociable behaviour. One theory is that as one whale becomes stranded the other members of its pod try to help and become stranded themselves.

Pilot whales are the largest member of the dolphin family. They get their name from the fact that researchers believe that each pod follows a "pilot" in the group.

Their distinguishing feature is a large bulbous forehead, which protrudes beyond the mouth and small beak. - BBC.

A Beach walker was stunned when he found a deadly pufferfish - washed up in Dorset.

At first glance the bizarre-looking fish appeared to be a large bloated mackerel.

But it soon became apparent it was a deadly pufferfish, normally only found in sub-tropical waters.

It appears to have died while in full defensive mode, with its stomach fully inflated.

The species is well-known for ballooning in size by filling their bodies with water or air to deter predators from attacking them.

The 12 ins long specimen was found by Richard Fabbri, having been swept on to Chesil Beach in Dorset.

But had any beach forager picked up the silver fish and taken it home for their supper they would have been in for a nasty and fatal shock.

All pufferfish are poisonous and carry a toxin in their internal organs that has no known antidote.

There have been several incidents of people who have died after consuming a pufferfish believing it to be a harmless species.

Oceanic pufferfish - Lagocephalus lagocephalus in Latin - are very rare visitors to UK waters which is usually too cold for them.

Only a very small number have been recorded before, all off the south west coast.

Richard, who works at Weymouth Watersports, said: "It looked very odd. It had this big puffy belly that was under its throat but the rest of its body looked more like a mackerel."

Peter Tinsley, of the Dorset Wildlife Trust, said: "It is an oceanic pufferfish. We know of one that was actually caught off Chesil Beach in the 1980s so it is very rare to see them here.

"The waters of the west coast of England are a bit warmer than the rest of the country, mainly due to the effects of the Gulf Stream.

"It is quite a slender fish and they only inflate their bellies when they feel threatened."

Most pufferfish are found in sub-tropical and tropical waters in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.

They have four large teeth which are used for crushing the shells of crustaceans and mollusks, their natural prey. - Daily Mirror.

Rampeung Onlamai, 57, of Samkok, Thailand, was taking a shower at her apartment north of Bangkok when the huge snake sank its fangs into her right hand and attempted to drag her down the drain, Metro reports.

Rampeung grabbed a nearby broom to fend the animal off and called out for her daughter, who jumped in to save her and pull the python's head off her hand, Metro reports. The python then returned to its toilet nest.

Rampeung was taken to a local hospital, where she needed 20 stitches to close the wound.

Khaosod reports that Samkok district officer Metha Taweekunchai ordered his officers to capture the snake, so the family can start using the toilet again.

FUK-U-SHIMA: A Major Success - TEPCO Dismantling Crew Removes 400 Tons Of Spent Fuel From The Crippled Fukushima Reactor!

November 5, 2014 - JAPAN - The first of four sets of spent nuclear fuel rods has been removed from a damaged reactor building at Japan’s Fukushima power plant, scoring a major success in an effort to dismantle the quake and tsunami-wrecked facility.

The 1,331 spent fuel rod assemblies weighting some 400 tons have been recovered from the upper levels of the Reactor 4 building after a year-long operation, a spokeswoman for Fukushima operator TEPCO reported on Wednesday. The last 11 assemblies were removed on Tuesday.

The recovered assemblies were placed in a storage pool at ground level of the plant, the company said.

TEPCO is still to remove 180 rod assemblies that haven’t been used at the reactor and are considered less dangerous because, unlike the spent fuel, they have not been irradiated. Some of the unused rod assemblies are already in the new storage pool. The task is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Three other reactor buildings are holding almost 1,400 fuel assemblies in storage pools, and they must be recovered too. The operation started with Reactor 4 because it was damaged most in the March 2011 disaster due to a series of hydrogen explosions inside the building and is in danger of collapsing.

The operations at Reactors 1, 2 and 3 would be more difficult, because unlike Reactor 4 they were operational at the time of the disaster and experienced meltdowns, resulting in higher levels of radioactive contamination.

TEPCO plans to start removing fuel from Reactor 1 in 2019, two years later than originally planned. At the moment preparations for the removal are underway, with the operator recently removing the canopy over the building to allow debris removal.

The utility is surveying the interior of the Reactor 2 building and removing debris at the Reactor 3 using remote-controlled robots.

CONTAGION: Ebola In The United States - The Number Of People Under "Active Monitoring" For Ebola In New York City TRIPLES, City Officials Say?!

November 5, 2014 - NEW YORK, UNITED STATES - The number of people under "active monitoring" for Ebola symptoms has increased from 117 on Monday to 357 people Wednesday, health officials said.

The vast majority of those being monitored arrived in New York City within the past 21 days from the three Ebola-affected countries, the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation said in a statement.

Others being monitored are the staff caring for Dr. Craig Spencer, the physician being treated for Ebola at Bellevue Hospital, the lab workers who conducted his blood tests and the FDNY EMTs who transported the doctor.  

All of those being monitored showed no symptoms but are being checked on out of "an abundance of caution," the statement said.

One of the people under quarantine for coming into contact with Spencer will now be also subject to active monitoring because "the individual poses no public threat and is showing no symptoms," health officials said.

The person's movements will not be restricted, but the person will be assessed twice a day by city health workers. 

Authorities also said Spencer's condition also continues to improve. The latest good news about Spencer comes just four days after health officials upgraded his condition from "serious but stable" to "stable."

That announcement Saturday was made "based on our patient's clinical progress and response to treatment," city health officials said. "The patient will remain in isolation and continue to receive full treatment."

Officials also announced Saturday that one person under quarantine because of contact with Spencer will only be subject to direct active monitoring. 

The announcements came almost a week after authorities said Spencer had entered the next phase of his illness and warned that he was expected to get worse before he could get better.

He received a plasma transfusion from the second American Ebola patient, Nancy Writebol, on Oct. 25, according to SIM, the Christian organization that Writebol worked with before she was admitted to Emory University Hospital in August.

Authorities have said Spencer was awake, communicating and undergoing plasma and antiviral therapies, treatments that have been used to treat Ebola patients at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta and at the Nebraska Medical Center.

His fiancee, Morgan Dixon, was released from the hospital days ago and returned to the couple's Hamilton Heights apartment. She had not developed any sign of the illness, and she was to remain under quarantine at home. - NBC New York.

Batu Tara (Sunda Islands, Indonesia): The volcano continues to have frequent mild to very strong strombolian, sometimes small vulcanian-type explosions, but also intermittent, short-lived effusive phases.

When observed during 1-4 Nov on our current volcano expedition, explosions occurred at intervals ranging from 5-30 minutes. A small lava dome-like structure is visible at and just below the rim of the active crater.

Typically, before larger eruptions, the dome started to produce small rockfalls, presumably caused by small inflation as pressure built up.

Several vents were active at the crater.

Ash plumes from the explosions reached 500-1000 m height. Bombs were ejected to up to approx. 500-600 m height and traveled up to 1 km horizontal distance.

Pyroclastic flow and effusive eruption:
An intense short-lived effusive phase took place this night: at around 2 am local time, a powerful explosion was immediately followed by a short lava-rich, fountain-like explosion that initiated a large incandescent avalanche over the whole width of the sciara, causing also some parts of the upper dome to collapse.

The avalanche turned into a small pyroclastic flow that reached the shore of the sciara and continued above water for approx. 100 m.

Following this event, an effusive phase began that lasted approx. 2 hours, characterized by continuous rockfalls from the glowing dome at the summit. Several hours later, the deposit from this activity at the shore was still steaming.

During the same time, some explosions occurred as well, some particular powerful ones that sent bombs into the sea and forcing us to abandon camp.


Sakurajima (Kyushu, Japan): The volcano's activity is currently elevated. At least 3 explosions yesterday produced ash plumes that rose to more than 10,000 ft (3 km) altitude.


Sinabung (Sumatra, Indonesia): Growth of the viscous lava dome and lava lobe on the southeastern flank continues. Several pyroclastic flows, mostly smaller ones, have occurred from time to time during the past days.

At least some of them seem now to affect the previously untouched western flank, perhaps as the result of the changed topography at the summit due to the accumulated lava.


Kilauea (Hawai'i): USGS staff from HVO measured the lava flow yesterday and reported that "the leading edge of the flow has not advanced since last Thursday, October 30, but the flow continued to inflate, and minor breakouts were scattered across the flow interior behind the flow front.

The most significant (although still minor) breakouts were occurring about 370 meters (405 yards) above Apaʻa Street on Tuesday afternoon.

A brief helicopter overflight on Tuesday afternoon confirmed that little surface lava is present on the June 27th flow field. The outbreaks on the north and south margins of the flow near Kaohe Homesteads have also subsided relative to a few days ago."


Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): The volcano's activity remains essentially unchanged. A new lava dome is slowly growing in the inner summit crater and produces glow at night and occasional small explosions.

During the past 24 hours, activity has been a bit more intense. An explosion 20 minutes ago sent incandescent material to approx. 600 m distance outside the crater rim.

CONTAGION: The Ebola Anomalies - President Obama Seeks $6.2 BILLION To Combat Ebola; However The World Health Organization Has Reduced The Death Toll To 4,818 And Cases To 13,042 As The Number Of Infections Keep Falling?!

November 5, 2014 - UNITED STATES - President Barack Obama on Wednesday asked Congress for $6.2 billion in emergency funds to confront Ebola at its source in West Africa and to secure the United States against any possible spread.

Of the total, $2 billion would be apportioned to the United States Agency for International Development and $2.4 billion would go to the Department of Health and Human Services, the White House said. More than $1.5 billion would be for a contingency fund to deal with any unanticipated developments like a flare-up in West Africa or a need to vaccinate U.S. health care workers.

The Ebola money is the first request from Obama in the aftermath of an election that ushered in a Republican-controlled Congress, which is being seen as a repudiation of the president. The Ebola crisis has received bipartisan attention amid concerns over the potential of the disease to spread into the United States.

The White House is asking for prompt action, meaning it wants approval during the current lame duck session, while Democrats are still in control of the Senate. It wants the money on an "emergency" basis, meaning it should be added to the deficit. Republicans, if they agree the money is needed, may press for spending cuts elsewhere in the budget.

Republicans have been especially critical of the administration's domestic response, criticizing its coordination with states and questioning the security measures it has put in place. Still, less than a handful of cases have materialized in the United States. One patient who contracted the disease in Liberia died in Dallas, two nurses who treated him became infected but eventually recovered and one doctor who returned from West Africa where he was treating Ebola patients became sick and is now under care in a hospital in New York City.

The nearly $2 billion for USAID and $127 million for the Department of State would help carry out the U.S. anti-Ebola mission in West Africa. More than $2.4 billion would go to HHS, but administration officials would not break down the request on the basis of what was to be used to fight the disease overseas and what was meant to boost defenses in the United States. The Pentagon would get about $112 million.

The $4.64 billion in immediate spending would be used to strengthen the public health system in the U.S., combat the epidemic in West Africa, and speed up the development and testing of vaccines and other therapies. The money also would be used to help vulnerable foreign countries detect and respond to the disease.

The administration would establish more than 50 Ebola treatment centers throughout the country, procure safety suits, and more strictly monitor travelers on their arrival in the U.S.

"My foremost priority is to protect the health and safety of Americans, and this request supports all necessary steps to fortify our domestic health system and prevent any outbreaks at home," Obama said in a letter to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. Boehner's office said appropriators would review the request.

In making its case for the request, Obama faces a challenge of reassuring the public that Ebola is a difficult disease to contract here in the United States while at the same time insisting that stopping the virus at its West Africa source remains an urgent priority.

The public's attention has waned since the federal government and the governors of New York and New Jersey clashed over quarantine guidelines for returning travelers from the afflicted region. Absent a new case in the U.S., the focus has turned back to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, where the disease has cost nearly 5,000 lives.

Aiming to show he's still focused on the issue, Obama on Wednesday called U.S. health workers staffing a U.S. military-constructed Ebola treatment unit set to open its doors next week in Monrovia, Liberia, the White House said.

Wednesday's request is in addition to steps the administration already has taken to attack the disease in Africa and to set up a defense in the U.S. Obama has authorized the Pentagon to deploy up to 4,000 service members to West Africa to build Ebola treatment units, a hospital for infected health care workers in the afflicted region and training for communities in how to conduct safe burials of victims. - ABC News.

WHO reduces Ebola death toll to 4,818

The new toll stands at 4,818 deaths, rather than 4,951 reported on October 31, the UN health agency said.

The number of reported cases has also fallen to 13,042 from 13,567.

The latest outbreak of Ebola has hit Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone hardest, with the majority of deaths and cases arising from these three west African countries.

In its latest toll, the WHO said 2,697 deaths were recorded in Liberia, out of a total of 6,525 cases.

In Sierra Leone, 1,070 people had died from the virus out of 4,759 cases.

In Guinea, 1,041 deaths have been recorded out of 1,731 cases.

Data from Nigeria and Senegal remained unchanged, and both countries have been declared Ebola free.

Nigeria had eight deaths and 20 cases, while Senegal had one case and no deaths.

Meanwhile, one death has been recorded in Mali—that of a two-year-old girl from Guinea—while one case of infection in Spain, a nurse, has been cured.

In the United States, four cases have been recorded and one person—a Liberian—had died from Ebola. - Medical Xpress.

Voters on the Hawaiian island of Maui passed the nation's first-ever ballot initiative targeting genetically engineered food following a campaign in which opponents of the measure, including corporate giants Monsanto and Dow AgroSciences, outspent supporters by a ratio of 87 to 1.

The initiative temporarily bans the farming of GMO crops in Maui County until the county conducts an analysis of the health effects of genetically modified farming and foods.

“I feel that this is a really strong message to the entire agrochemical industry in the state of Hawaii that we are no longer going to sit idly by and watch them expand their operations without the kinds of regulations that ensure the health and safety of people across Hawaii,” Ashley Lukens, director of the Hawaii chapter of the non-profit the Center for Food Safety, told Honolulu Civil Beat.

An abundance of studies have shown no negative health effects from the consumption of GMO foods.

Monsanto Co. and Dow Chemical Co., which conduct field trials of genetically modified crops and also grow engineered seed for commercial purposes in Maui, said they plan to challenge the ban.

Monsanto will “ask the court to declare that this initiative is legally flawed and cannot be enforced,” Charla Lord, a spokewoman for St. Louis-based Monsanto, said today in an e-mail. She declined to elaborate on the company's next steps.

“We believe that the ban would be illegal, and we intend to protect our legal rights,” Robyn Heine, a spokeswoman for Midland, Michigan-based Dow said in an e-mail. The company is considering its options, she said.

The market turmoil in the first half of October may be a “coming attractions” for the next real crash that could turn into a “deep financial crisis” if investors lose confidence in the effectiveness of monetary stimulus, Elliott wrote in a third-quarter letter to investors, a copy of which was obtained by Bloomberg News.

“Nobody can predict how long governments can get away with fake growth, fake money, fake jobs, fake financial stability, fake inflation numbers and fake income growth,” New York-based Elliott wrote. “When confidence is lost, that loss can be severe, sudden and simultaneous across a number of markets and sectors.”

Six years of near-zero interest rates and three rounds of asset purchases by the Federal Reserve have fueled economic growth and helped U.S. stocks more than triple from their 2009 low when including dividends. The stock market has rebounded 8.3 percent through yesterday from a six-month low on Oct. 15, fueled by better-than-forecast economic data and improving earnings reports.

While the U.S. is doing better than the rest of the world, the acceleration in the second quarter only reversed a “terrible” first quarter and has yet to be sustained in the remainder of the year, Elliott wrote.

“We do not think this optimism is warranted, and we think a lot of the data is cooked or misleading,” Elliott, which manages $25.4 billion and was founded by Singer in 1977, wrote. “A good deal of the economic and jobs growth since the crisis has been fake growth, with very little chance of being self-reinforcing and sustainable.”

Elliott said that the reported growth numbers are too high because the official inflation number is understating actual inflation by as much as 1 percent a year. That’s because economists focus on measures such as core inflation or make “hedonic adjustments” for improvements in the quality of consumer goods. Inflation is also distorted “by the increasing gap between the spending basket of the well-off and that of the middle class,” the firm said.

Bonds, Art

“The inflation that has infected asset prices is not to be ignored just because the middle-class spending bucket is not rising in price at the same rates as high-end real estate, stocks, bonds, art and other things that benefit from” quantitative easing, Elliott wrote.

Stephen Spruiell, a spokesman for Elliott, declined to comment on the letter.

The unemployment rate, at 5.9 percent in September, doesn’t reflect that the workforce participation rate is at a 35-year low, according to Elliott, and that full-time jobs have been replaced by part-time jobs, and high-paying jobs by relatively low-paying jobs. Real wages, the firm said, have been stagnant since the financial crisis.

The economy grew 2.3 percent in the year ended in September, compared with an average 2.9 percent advance in the four years before the past recession began, according to figures from the Commerce Department. It’s forecast to grow 2.2 percent this year and 3 percent in 2015, according to the median estimate of economists surveyed by Bloomberg last month.

Deficit Shrinks

Inflation, meanwhile, has been muted and government bonds rallied. Consumer prices over the past five years have grown 2.1 percent on average, and were up 1.7 percent in the 12 months through September, according to figures from the Labor Department. They are projected to rise 2 percent in 2015 and 2.2 percent in 2016, according to economists surveyed by Bloomberg last month.

Government bonds as measured by the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Treasury Index have rallied 26 percent in the past six years. The U.S. budget deficit has narrowed to the lowest level since 2008, marking the sharpest turnaround in the government’s fiscal position in at least 46 years. The shortfall of $483.4 billion in the 12 months ended Sept. 30 was 2.8 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product of $17.2 trillion over the same period, according to data compiled by Bloomberg using Commerce Department figures. The figure peaked at 10.1 percent of GDP in December 2009.

‘Generally Improved’

“Mortgage rates dropped, Treasury rates stayed low, and things generally improved,” said Brian Jacobsen, who helps oversee $232 billion as chief portfolio strategist at Wells Fargo Advantage Funds in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. “Was this due to the Fed? Not entirely, but probably at least partially.”

Bill Gross, in his second investment outlook since joining Janus Capital Group Inc., said yesterday that fiscal spending may be needed to fight the “growing possibility” of deflation, because central bank policies have pushed up only asset prices and not prices in the real economy.

Elliott, whose oldest fund has delivered compounded annual returns of 13.9 percent since inception, said that while central banks have lifted asset prices, there have been no “significant structural improvements” since the financial crisis that would allow the developed economies to grow faster.

“Our belief is that the global economy and financial system are in a kind of artificial stupor in which nobody (including ourselves) has a good picture of what the next environment will look like,” the firm wrote. - Bloomberg.

CONTAGION: Fresh Ebola Outbreak In Koinadugu, Sierra Leone - Causes Fear And Panic; Prompts Call For Urgent Help From Leader Of A Remote Chiefdom!

November 5, 2014 - SIERRA LEONE - The leader of a remote chiefdom in Sierra Leone has called for urgent help to contain Ebola, which is causing fear and panic in his community.

The fresh outbreak of Ebola in Koinadugu, a district previously unaffected by the virus, has affected more than 60 people in a small chiefdom close to Guinea, the Red Cross has said.

The head of Sierra Leone’s Red Cross team, John Mara, told the Guardian that at least 25 people had died and 38 people were believed to be infected after lab results proved positive for 15 more patients. Two of those buried had died on Tuesday, including a seven-year-old girl.

Koinadugu had prided itself on being the only district in Sierra Leone to have been Ebola-free after local chiefs imposed a quarantine, barring travel and creating a system of official distribution vans and trucks to help farmers and traders get their product to neighbouring markets.

However, after two unexplained deaths in October were investigated, it emerged that Ebola had reached the chiefdom of Nieni and its three villages of Fankuya, Sumbaria and Kumala.

The Red Cross met chief Foday Jalloh, the paramount or head chief of Nieni, to get his permission to enter the region to help the community, where traditional burial practices and medical therapies may have contributed to the spread of the virus. Jalloh said: “Please help us, we need your help and support.”

Mara, who is from the area, said: “We discovered there had been 25 deaths already, some of them unexplained. Prior to this, the district went six months without Ebola. On 15 October there were two cases of unidentified deaths. The situation is not really good because we have just got the results that show there are 15 new cases, on top of 23 we already knew about.”

A Red Cross spokesman said it sent two burial teams to help local volunteers. However, the rugged terrain is making access difficult. “It’s about five hours’ drive to the district Kabala and then another five hours to the Nieni chiefdom. Our Toyota Land Cruiser got stuck twice yesterday on creeks and streams. Sometimes the bridge is just two logs for the right-hand and left-hand-side wheels,” he said.

He said there was evidence the infection rate had dropped significantly in Kailahun, where the burial teams had come from. It was at the centre of the first outbreak in June and the site of the first field hospital erected by Médecins sans Frontières. “There were about 400 new cases a week in the peak in August. It has come down to five or 10 in the last few days,” said the spokesman.

An estimated 70% of infections emanate from funerals, when highly contagious corpses have been washed in a traditional manner by friends and family.

The Red Cross said education and community training about the dangers of traditional burial practices in Kailahun and Kenema, a nearby commercial hub, appeared to be paying off.

“But we need to have zero new cases for 21 days before we can say it is clear of Ebola and all it takes is one case for it to start again,” said the spokesman.

The apparent slowdown in the east is countered by the continued growth of the disease in Freetown, where there are now more than 60 burials a day and a chronic shortage of treatment beds and health workers to staff them.

A UK-funded Ebola hospital outside the capital in Kerrytown hospital opened on Wednesday, adding 80 treatment beds and a 12-bed unit manned by the British army specifically for health workers infected by the disease.

The scale of the crisis has left Sierra Leone with a severe shortage of beds to treat Ebola patients. The World Health Organisation estimates that there are only 326 treatment beds in Sierra Leone but that up to 4,800 could be needed by the end of November. - The Guardian.

FIRE IN THE SKY: "Ridiculously Difficult" - The European Space Agency Will Attempt To Land On Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko On November 12!

November 5, 2014 - SPACE - On Nov. 12th, the European Space Agency will attempt something "ridiculously difficult"--that is, landing on a comet. The ESA's Rosetta spacecraft will drop a probe named Philae on Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. "The comet will be moving 40 times faster than a speeding bullet, spinning, shooting out gas and welcoming Rosetta on the surface with boulders, cracks, scarps and possibly meters of dust," says Art Chmielewski, the US Rosetta Project Manager at JPL. 

Generally speaking, space missions fall into one of three categories:  difficult, more difficult, and ridiculously difficult.

Flybys are difficult.  A spaceship travels hundreds of millions of miles through the dark void of space, pinpoints a distant planet or moon, and flies past it at 20 to 30 thousand mph, snapping pictures furiously during an achingly brief encounter.

Going into orbit is more difficult. Instead of flying past its target, the approaching spaceship brakes, changing its velocity by just the right amount to circle the planet.  One wrong move and the spacecraft bounces off the atmosphere, becoming an unintended meteor.

Landing is ridiculously difficult.  Just play NASA's "Seven Minutes of Terror" video. Watching Curiosity parachute, retrorocket, and sky-crane its way to the surface of Mars rarely fails to produce goosebumps. Since the Space Age began, the space agencies of Earth have succeeded in landing on only six bodies: Venus, Mars, the Moon, Titan, and asteroids 433 Eros and Itokawa.

In a move that could set a new standard for difficulty, the European Space Agency is about to add a seventh member to the list. On Nov. 12^th ESA's Rosetta spacecraft will drop a lander named "Philae" onto the surface of Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko.

"How hard is this landing?" asks Art Chmielewski, the US Rosetta Project Manager at JPL. "Consider this: The comet will be moving 40 times faster than a speeding bullet, spinning, shooting out gas and welcoming Rosetta on the surface with boulders, cracks, scarps and possibly meters of dust!"

Rosetta will drop Philae from a height of 22 km as the comet rotates freely below. No active steering will take place during the slow descent.

"Unlike previous landings, where reconnaissance had been done beforehand--at Mars, for instance, we mapped the planet well in advance—Rosetta just started learning about its target a couple of months ago," explains Claudia Alexander, Project Scientist for the U.S. Rosetta Project. "This introduces much more risk."
Rosetta arrived at 67P on August 6, 2014.  What it found was shocking.  The comet's nucleus is strangely shaped, (one observer has likened it to a "freak-show mushroom") dominated by a pair of mile-wide "knobs" joined by a boulder-strewn "neck." Picking a landing site would not be easy.

       "I added some ski tracks to the dusty slopes of the comet's neck," explains Savorani. "The underlying image was taken by Rosetta's NAVCAM on Oct. 28th."  Skiing on a comet? The idea's not so crazy. Astronauts have seriously discussed the possibility of skiing on the Moon,
where thick layers of moondust resemble the powder that coats parts of 67P. All you need are teflon skis.

Rosetta spent more than a month surveying the comet before engineers and scientists gathered in France to make their decision.

"None of the candidate landing sites met all of the operational criteria at the 100% level," says Stephan Ulamec, Philae Lander Manager at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), "but Site J is clearly the best solution."

Site J is a relatively flat, boulder-free location on the smaller of the comet's knobs.  It gets plenty of sunlight for the lander's solar panels and has good line-of-sight visibility for communications with Rosetta orbiting overhead.

The descent will take about 7 hours, a drawn-out process that could be enlivened by unpredictable jets of gas emerging from the comet's core.

You thought 7 minutes of terror was bad? "This will be Seven Hours of Terror," says Alexander.

If all goes well, Philae will touch down at walking pace and deploy harpoons to fasten itself to the crusty surface.  A suite of 10 sensors on the lander, including a drill for sample collection and an acoustic sounder to probe the comet's sub-surface structure, can then begin an unprecedented study of a comet at point-blank range.

"A comet is unlike any other planetary body that we've attempted to land on," says Alexander. "Getting Philae down successfully will be an incredible achievement for humankind!"

PLANETARY TREMORS: Another 4.9 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Oregon/Nevada Border - After Seismic Swarms Of Earthquakes In July!

November 5, 2014 - OREGON/NEVADA, UNITED STATES - A magnitude 4.9 earthquake rippled beneath the desert floor about 40 miles east/southeast of Lakeview late Tuesday night on the Oregon/Nevada border, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was followed by a series of smaller quakes in the same general area. Four people reported feeling it; the nearest person was in Cedarville, California, about 45 miles west.

USGS geophysicist Randy Baldwin says the Black Rock Desert area has had several minor quakes in the last few months.

Seismologists with the Nevada Seismological Laboratory have been tracking swarms of earthquakes in the area since July.

Nevada is the third most seismically active state in the nation behind California and Alaska.

Nevada ranks among the most seismically active States.

A number of the larger shocks have produced some spectacular examples of surface faulting; these include shocks at Pleasant Valley (1915), Cedar Mountain (1932), Excelsior Mountain (1934), Rainbow Mountain (1954), and Fairview Peak - Dixie Valley (1954). Although these events are classied as major earthquakes in terms of magnitude, no fatalities were reported and building damage was minimal because of the sparse population of the epicentral areas.

The earliest reported earthquake in Nevada occurred in 1851. A newspaper article in 1865 cited reports of an earthquake 13 years earlier near Pyramid Lake. The account stated that great cracks opened from which water spouted 100 feet high. Large landslides were also reported.

On October 2, 1915, three strong earthquakes within about 7 hours disturbed a large part of northern Nevada. The third tremor had an estimated magnitude of 7.75. It destroyed or seriously damaged many adobe houses in Pleasant Valley. Most of the damage was confined to the towns of Kennedy, Lovelock, and Winnemucca. The earthquake was felt over a very wide area - from Baker, Oregon, to San Diego, California, and from the Pacific coast to beyond Salt Lake City, Utah, an area of about 1,295,000 square kilometers. A scarp 1.5 to 4.5 meters high and 35 kilometers long, was formed parallel to the base of the Sonoma Mountains. About 100 aftershocks followed the main earthquake.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.3 originated in west-central Nevada on December 20, 1932. The epicentral area, near Cedar Mountain, was almost uninhabited. Two cabins, one of stone, and the other of adobe, were destroyed, and mining property was damaged. Many chimneys were thrown down at Mina and Luning. At Hawthorne, the shock cracked and threw down chimneys. Extensive and complicated faulting occurred northeast of Mina, over an area of about 60 kilometers long and 6 to 14 kilometers wide in the valley between the Cedar and Pilot Mountains. The total felt area was approximately the same as that of the 1915 shock.

About a year later, on January 30, 1934, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake which centered in the Excelsior Mountains area about 80 kilometers west of the 1932 zone, again caused some damage at Mina. The collapse of some adobe buildings at Marietta was also reported. Several foreshocks were noted; the strongest had a magnitude of 5.5 and occurred about an hour before the main earthquake. Slight damage at Mina resulted from this foreshock. A small fault scarp 12.5 centimeters high and about 1,500 meters long was formed on the south slope of the Excelsior Mountains. The earthquake was felt widely over Nevada and in parts of California and Utah, an area of about 285,000 square kilometers.

The Rainbow Mountain area in the Stillwater Range, about 25 kilometers east of Fallon, was the origin of a series of earthquakes in July and August 1954. The first strong earthquake on July 6, magnitude 6.6, was damaging at Fallon; it was followed by a magnitude 6.4 shock about 11 hours later and by a series of smaller aftershocks. Another large earthquake, magnitude 6.8, on August 23 caused additional damaged at Fallon. It too was followed by many aftershocks. Ground breakage was traced for about 40 kilometers.

On December 16, 1954, a major earthquake of magnitude 7.1 occurred about 50 kilometers east of the epicentral region of the July - August shocks, near Frenchman's Station. A magnitude 6.8 aftershock followed 4 minutes later. Intensity X was assigned to the spectacular surface ruptures which occurred in two major fault zones; one on the west side of Dixie Valley along the east base of the Stillwater Range and the other on the east side of Fairview Valley in the Clan Alpine Range. Faulting extended north and south for a linear distance of approximately 90 kilometers. Vertical movement of 1.5 to 4.5 meters was measured in Dixie Valley. About 2 to 6 meters of vertical movement and about 1 to 4 meters of horizontal movement were measured near Fairview Peak. Because the epicentral region was sparsely populated, this potentially destructive earthquake caused relatively little property damage. At Fallon, a few toppled chimneys were noted. Chimneys twisted and fell at Austin. At Sacramento, California, located about 265 kilometers distant, the shock caused an estimated $20,000 damage to a large underground water tank at the city's filtration plant. Some damage was also reported at the city's sewage disposal plant. The shock was felt throughout Nevada and in parts of Arizona, California, Idaho, and Oregon, an area of about 520,000 square kilometers. Again, a long series of aftershocks followed.

Only Nevada's major shocks have been listed here. A study by the University of Nevada in 1965 tabulated 1,173 "felt" events with epicenters within the State during the 1852 - 1961 period. Another 586 having magnitudes greater than 4.0 were recorded and probably were felt by some residents. Approximately 220 were reported in nonspecific terms (for example, "several aftershocks were felt"). A general increase in the number of events reported each year has been correlated with the upward trend in population.

ICE AGE NOW: Why Is It Cooling So Fast - The Effects Of Global Volcanism On Global Cooling; Arctic Sea Ice Extent Highest In A Decade And Weather Channel's Co-Founder Says "Global Warming Is A Whole Lot O Baloney"?!

November 5, 2014 - EARTH - We are being beaten by a one two punch. From one side we have the sun diminishing its radiance and on the other volcanoes have gone berserk these past few years. And we have 'official' smoke signals going up from the ICC global warming crowd that it is not warming after all with no sorry and no admission of being wrong or lying. (Be sure to read the special note at the end about the new official ICC statements, a new volcano blowing its stack since yesterday, and a spiritual note to global warming liars.)

Why is it cooling so fast?

Until recently, it has been the hard science of astrophysics that has been warning us that the sun has entered a phase of low activity, which will drive cooler weather here on earth. The head of the Space Research section of the Russian Academy of Science, Professor Khabibullo Abdussamatov, in 2006 issued a press release, warning that the world should prepare for imminent global cooling. He predicted that the global cooling would start in 2012 - 2015, and would likely peak around 2055.

"On the basis of our [solar emission] research, we developed a scenario of a global cooling of the Earth's climate by the middle of this century and the beginning of a regular 200-year-long cycle of the climate's global warming at the start of the 22nd century," said Abdussamatov. He and his colleagues had concluded that a period of global cooling similar to one seen in the late 17th century - when canals froze in the Netherlands and people had to leave their dwellings in Greenland - could start in 2012-2015 and reach its peak in 2055-2060.

The Russians did not calculate into their predictions these record breaking volcanic emissions into the atmosphere. Alone the sun was throwing us into cooling. Volcanic cooling is being added to the formula before our very eyes and only the blind at this point cannot see what is coming.

Increasing volcanic eruptions have been spewing ash into the atmosphere over the last 14 years are partially responsible for the cooling of Earth (slowing down the effects of global warming), a recent study published in Nature Geoscience suggests. Researchers attribute this helping hand to just 17 of the eruptions from 1998 to 2012 that pumped sulfur dioxide into Earth's upper atmosphere. The molecule formed liquid particles that reflected sunlight back to space rather than to the Earth's surface, moderating the larger-scale warming of the planet surface, the Los Angeles Times reported.

It is true that most volcanic pollution of the lower atmosphere is removed within days by the effects of rainfall and gravity, but stratospheric pollution may remain there for several years, gradually spreading to cover much of the globe. This stratospheric pollution results in a substantial reduction in the direct solar beam, largely through scattering by the highly reflective sulphuric acid aerosols. This can amount to tens of percent. The reduction, is however, compensated for by an increase in diffuse radiation and by the absorption of outgoing terrestrial radiation (the greenhouse effect). Overall, there is a net reduction of 5 to 10% in energy received at the Earth's surface.

The Earth seems to have been smoking a lot recently. Volcanoes are erupting in Iceland, Hawaii, Indonesia, Ecuador and Mexico, as well as the recent eruption of Japan's Mount Ontake. Others, in the Philippines and Papua New Guinea, erupted recently but seem to have calmed down. That's the short list.

The Guardian printed, "Due to factors such as the gravitational pull of the sun and moon, the speed at which the Earth rotates constantly changes. Accordingly, the length of a day actually varies from year to year. The difference is only in the order of milliseconds. But new research suggests that this seemingly small perturbation could bring about significant changes on our planet - or more accurately, within it." A study published in the journal Terra Nova in February showed that changes in the Earth's rotation rate tended to be followed by increases in global volcanic activity.

The number of volcanoes that are erupting continues to rise. In 2013, we witnessed the most volcanic eruptions worldwide that we have ever seen in a single year, and this increased activity has carried over into 2014. The previous number was set in 2010, at 82 volcanic eruptions for the year. The number of volcanoes erupting across the planet has been steadily rising from just 55 recorded in 1990. The average number of volcanic eruptions per year should be about 50 to 60; as of December 5, 2013, we were already at 83.

"In the last decade, the amount of volcanic aerosol in the stratosphere has increased, so more sunlight is being reflected back into space," said lead author Benjamin Santer, climate scientist at Laurence Livermore National Laboratory, in a press release. "This has created a natural cooling of the planet and has partly offset the increase in surface and atmospheric temperatures due to human influence."

Therefore, we know what volcanoes can do but no one has been able to calculate the accumulating effects of many smaller eruptions going off at the same time. Many of our recent volcanic eruptions have been very large and together seem to be having a strong and unexpected effect. The well-known cooling effect of volcanic ash is combining with diminishing radiation from the sun to slam us into, not eventual cooling, but quick cooling that will change life in the higher latitudes this year.

In my last post, Climate Disaster Coming Our Way, it was mentioned that British weatherman were freaking out with their dire predictions for their country for the next five months. We saw that Bulgaria is already in a snow emergency. If this winter is even worse than the last one we are going to be in for a hard time. Having a month to six weeks shaved off our collective growing season suddenly is going to have grave consequences in a world already with a short supply of food.
The huge gas, ash and aerosol cloud blasted into the atmosphere by Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines, which erupted in 1991. Mount Pinatubo, a stratovolcano in the Philippines, cooled global temperatures for about 2 - 3 years. The eruption was one of the century's most powerful eruptions. Its huge dust and aerosol cloud cooled parts of the world by up to 0.4 degrees Celsius.

In 1883, the explosion of Krakatoa (Krakatau) created volcanic winter-like conditions. The four years following the explosion were unusually cold, and the winter of 1887-1888 included powerful blizzards. Record snowfalls were recorded worldwide.

The 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora, a stratovolcano in Indonesia, occasioned mid-summer frosts in New York State and June snowfalls in New England and Newfoundland and Labrador in what came to be known as the "Year Without a Summer" of 1816.

This one volcano shown above effected global temperatures. Now we have many smaller eruptions that are ganging up to help the sun plunge us into the cold. It really is too bad global warming was never real, we could have used it.

Special Note: In just the one day since finishing this essay we have the new official story. So please, all you global warmers get the cotton out of your brains and get it right. Global warming? Not anytime soon, according to a top United Nations and ICC scientist. Dr. Mojib Latif of the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences told Bavarian Radio that the so-called "pause" in global warming could continue for another three decades. Currently, satellite datasets show that the average global temperature has not warmed in more than 18 years. See video of this report but note they are still lying by promising global warming will start again in ten years. That is a promise no one can make or keep.

To all global warmers please be in truth for a change, it will not hurt that much I promise. Did you know that in the sacred heart of every human being is a place that can only stand the light of day when it is with truth? Because love is the truth and God behind that; our organ of pure being, our center of pure feeling and vulnerability, which in the bible is referred to as the heart, can only stand the truth. When faced with untruths it simply folds its cards and goes away. It closes and either turns to inner pain or just simply ceases to exist.

What happens with infidelities, with secrets we hold from a loved one (and everyone should be on the same standard with communication and truth) is that this special part of ourselves closes down automatically and our loved one feels the difference but we deny to them our truth, which is that we did not maintain our fidelity. It is not the sex but the lie and is the core of infidelity. Global warming is a lie and it is time for everyone to come clean about it.
This big high monster of a volcano just went off in Costa Rica and the Civil Aviation Administration issued a warning for all airplanes to avoid a 32-kilometer (20-mile) radius around Turrialba Volcano and up to an altitude of 5.8 km (19,000 feet). That is one more sources of high altitude sun blocking pollution.

Instead of promising of new warming in the far future real scientists (meaning not ones with institutional blinders on) would be calculating in every volcano and every report from the astrophysicist department about solar activity. We really do not need people in important professional positions dishing out more disinformation into the collective group mind set. - Dr. Sircus.

Weather Channel co-founder: 'Hello, everybody! Global warming is a whole lot of baloney'

The idea that there is significant man-made global warming is "a whole lot of baloney," Weather Channel co-founder John Coleman insisted on CNN's "Reliable Sources" Sunday morning.

"The government only gives money to scientists who will present their hypothesis," said Coleman, a meteorologist who helped found The Weather Channel 32 years ago. "They don't have any choice; if you are going to get the money, you have to present their position. Those are the ones the government pays for. That doesn't make it right, that only means it's bought and paid for."

But Coleman, who debunked climate change in a letter to UCLA last month, told show host Brian Stelter Sunday that he resented him introducing him as a climate change "denier."

"That is a word meant to put me down," he told him. "I'm a skeptic about climate change, and I want to make it darned clear that [Weather Channel CEO David] Kenny is not a scientist, I am."

He also told Stelter that CNN, like The Weather Channel, has come to a consensus on global warming.

"There is no consensus in science," said Coleman. "Science isn't a vote. Science is about facts. If you get down to the hard cold facts, climate change is not happening. There is no significant man-made global warming now."

The matter has "become a big political point of the Democratic Party," Coleman continued, and he regrets "that it has become political and not scientific, but science is on my side."

When Stelter attempted to tell Coleman that it was unlikely that there would be an agreement on his show, the former Weather Channel executive agreed.

"I know we're not, because you wouldn't allow it to happen on CNN," Coleman told him. "But I'm happy that I got on the air and got a chance to talk to your viewers. Hello, everybody! There is no global warming!"

Coleman said he and other scientists will "keep battling" but meanwhile, he hopes that people will research online and find websites that "present the papers that show that none of this alarmism about ice and heat waves and droughts, none of it is happening."

Coleman said he is "terribly disappointed" that his old network stands behind climate change, but he's not surprised.

"The Weather Channel has bought into it, they've drunk the Kool-Aid," he told Stelter. "But so has all the media. That's no big surprise."

After Coleman made similar statements on Fox News last week, his former network issued as statement that while Coleman has a place in the company's history, it still stands behind the idea of climate change.

"That's a reasonable statement, not full of the sky is falling," Coleman told Stelter. "The programming they put on the TV is not reasonable. They put on their climate geeks. Those aren't scientists, they're nuts."

And Coleman says he's "terribly disappointed" with what The Weather Channel has become over the years.

"I created a channel to give people their weather, tell them what the weather is now and what it's going to be where they live in their region and keep them posted on their weather and to serve a real purpose," he said. "That channel has become totally distorted and has become as strange as it can be."

Kenny, appearing after Coleman, told Stelter that "the science is pretty clear about climate change," and that The Weather Channel hasn't changed its position on the matter since 2007.

"Some people were confused to hear a statement from somebody who is noted as co-founder of The Weather Channel," said Kenny. "He hasn't been with us in 31 years, and he's not speaking for The Weather Channel in any way."

Further, said Kenny, he's concerned "whenever the subject veers from science."

"I would prefer people use the credentials they have today, not the credentials they had three decades ago," Kenny commented. "It's a free country, and people can use their resumes, and other people can put their titles on them. What I care more about is our viewers come to us and fully trust us. I care that the scientists of the world continue to take part with us."

And while his network has come under criticism that extreme storms are good for ratings, Kenny insisted that "we never like to see a loss of life, a loss of property. Safety is an important mission. It is true, there is more drought, more flood, more extreme weather as the science evolves." - Newsmax.
