February 10, 2016 - NEW YORK, UNITED STATES - A leak at the Indian Point nuclear facility in New York has sent contaminant into the area groundwater, causing radioactivity levels 65,000% higher than normal, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Saturday… The groundwater beneath the nuclear plant… flows into the Hudson River at a point about 25 miles north of New York City… [T]he NRC plans to send an expert in health physics and radiation protection to the site - CNN.

Gov. Cuomo said the plant’s operator, Entergy, reported “alarming levels” of radioactivity at three monitoring wells, with one well’s radioactivity increasing nearly 65,000%… Other state officials also blasted the controversial nuclear facility’s most recent mishap. Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee (D-Suffern) said she was concerned not only for the surrounding community but also for the “impact this radioactive water may have on public health and our environment,” Jaffee added. - NY Daily News.

“Tonight on News 12 — a radioactive leak at Indian Point sparking a full investigation by the State over concerns of contamination Officials discover alarming levels of radioactivity at several monitoring wells… with one’s radioactivity increasing by nearly 65,000%… Officials say… there is no immediate threat to the public.” - News 12 transcript.

It was unclear how much water spilled, but samples showed the water had a radioactivity level of more than 8 million picocuries per liter The levels are the highest regulators have seen at Indian Point… Contaminated groundwater would likely slowly make its way to the Hudson River, [an NRC spokesman] said… Tritium [is] a radioactive form of hydrogen that poses the greatest risk of causing cancer when it ends up in drinking water. - AP.

“Yesterday I learned that radioactive tritium-contaminated water leaked… The company reported alarming levels of radioactivity at three monitoring wells, with one well’s radioactivity increasing nearly 65,000 percent.” - Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

“I am deeply concerned Indian Point has experienced significant failure in its operation and maintenance… levels of radioactivity reported this week are significantly higher than in past incidents Our first concern is for the health and safety of the residents… I am directing you to fully investigate this incident… to determine the extent of the release, its likely duration, its causes, its potential impacts to the environment and public health, and how the release can be contained.” - Gov. Cuomo’s letter to Commissioner Zucker (Dept. of Health) & Acting Commissioner Seggos (Dept. of Environmental Conservation).

“I am concerned about the alarming increase in radioactive water leaking… My primary concern is the potential impact this… may have on public health and our environment.” - Ellen Jaffee, New York Assembly member.

INFRASTRUCTURE & SOCIETAL COLLAPSE: Boiling Anger - Clashes, Violent Protests In Turkey After Mine Blast Kills Over 240! [PHOTOS+VIDEO]

May 14, 2014 - TURKEY - Clashes have erupted across Turkey as residents rally in anger at a mining accident which killed 245 people in the western Turkish town of Soma on Tuesday. Eight hundred marched on Ankara’s energy ministry as police fired tear gas and water cannon.

Party (AKP) government on the mining disaster in western Turkey, in Ankara May 14, 2014. (Reuters)

Violent protests have been reported in Soma itself, where relatives of the dead miners are unleashing their anger at Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

PM Erdogan visited Soma, the site of the disaster, on Wednesday. There, he was confronted with a spontaneous protest with locals booing and whistling at him as he made statements regarding the disaster at a news conference.

Erdogan was forced to shelter in a local supermarket to escape the enraged crowds.

Rocks were thrown as crowd members accused Erdogan of being a murderer and a thief. Riot police used a water cannon on the demonstrators as they approached the ruling NKP party headquarters.

In Ankara, students marched on the energy ministry yelling anti-government slogans and hurling rocks. Law enforcers responded by deploying tear gas and water cannon against the protesters.

Further protests swept through Istanbul, with people gathering in the city metro and outside the headquarters of the company which owns the mine. Graffiti alleging that the company had committed murder was daubed on the walls of the Soma Holdings office, while others painted their faces black in solidarity with the miners.

The company stood accused of sacrificing safety for the sake of profit.

“This mining corporation came out and talked about how successful they were. And then what happened? Together with this explosion, we've seen that no precautions were taken, the lives of the workers were not valued, and their lives were put in danger for more profit,” protester Emre Erkaslan told AP.

Soma is 120 km (75 miles) northeast of the Aegean coastal city of Izmir.

In addition to killing some 238 people, 80 are still feared trapped, said Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the news conference. The toll may yet rise further.

However, nearly 450 miners have been rescued in the efforts.

Shortly after Erdogan made his comments, Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz declared that the accident was likely to be the country’s deadliest ever mining disaster.

The cause of the fire is not yet clear, according to an emailed statement fromSoma Komur Isletmeleri. However, "the subsequent spread of carbon monoxide is, unfortunately, the reason for the loss of life," according to the statement.

Turkey’s worst mining disaster in recent years was a gas explosion in 1992 near the Black Sea port of Zonguldak, which left some 270 workers dead. Since then, Turkey has borne witness to several mining accidents. - RT.

INFRASTRUCTURE & SOCIETAL COLLAPSE: Massive Mine Explosion In Turkey - 238 People Dead, 120 Others Trapped!

May 14, 2014 - TURKEY - A mine explosion in western Turkey has killed 238 people, with 80 injured according to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the toll could rise with many more still trapped.

Erdogan made the announcement at a news conference during a visit to the western town of Soma – the location of the disaster – on Wednesday. He added that a further 120 workers remained trapped.

Yildiz told reporters earlier in the day that 787 workers had been in the Soma mine when the explosion hit a power unit. Most of the confirmed dead were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning, Yildiz added.

Four of the injured were in a critical condition, according to Yildiz.

More than 360 workers have been evacuated thus far. However, Yidiz said that hopes for the rescue effort were "dimming". "We are worried that this death toll will rise," he told reporters.

"We fear that the numbers could rise further," he stated, adding that it was necessary to complete the rescue operation by dawn.

Rescue workers pumped oxygen into the mine in an attempt to keep trapped miners alive, Reuters reported. A line of police held back thousands of family and fellow workers of the trapped miners who assembled outside of a Soma hospital.

"Fresh air, oxygen is being pumped into the mine. This is the most important thing for our workers down there," Yildiz said.

The mayor of Soma, a district in Manisa, also said the explosion was caused by an electrical fault, Reuters reported. The explosion, which occurred about 1.2 miles below the surface, reportedly disabled an elevator in the mine shaft. The workers are trapped some 2.5 miles from the exit.

Soma is 120 km (75 miles) northeast of the Aegean coastal city of Izmir.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan cancelled a Wednesday trip to Albania in order to visit the site of the blast, his office told Reuters.

"Rescue efforts for our brothers in the mine are ongoing ... God willing, in the coming hours, I hope to receive uplifting news," Erdogan said Tuesday.
