February 7, 2016 - WISCONSIN, UNITED STATES - The Iceman cometh to the US city of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin on Saturday - and he took a few vehicles with him.

Visitors to the Winterfest in the resort town near Chicago decided to ignore warnings and park on what they thought was a frozen lake.

In a victory for Joni Mitchell fans everywhere, 15 unlucky festival goers found their cars and trucks partially submerged in the eight-square-mile freshwater body.

One of the owners Laurie Oberhelman told WDJT: "We were coming in and there were a lot of cars and not a lot of parking spots, and we looked and I said oh look there's plenty of cars parked on the lake. People park on the lake all the time from what I understand so let's do it. It was a bad choice."
The cars were removed by the local fire department with 10 of the 15 cars deemed a total loss.

Good luck claiming that off your insurance.

"Fortunately it's only a property issue right now, and nobody was injured or in the vehicles when they started to submerge. So it's a bad day, but a good day at the same time," Lieutenant Ed Gritzner told WDJT.

Those who lost their cars stuck around anyway to watch the US National Snow Sculpting Competition at Winterfest. Maybe Princess Elsa could sculpt them a new car.Lake Geneva was once a playground for the rich and (in)famous. Al Capone and Hugh Hefner spent many summers around the glacial lake. - RT.

MASS FISH DIE-OFF: "They're All Over The Lake" - Thousands Of Dead Fish Seen Along Wisconsin Shorelines After Harsh Winter!

Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources says the phenomenon is likely the result of thick ice that trapped fish in waters with low oxygen, Daily Tribune Media reported (http://bit.ly/1rB4iJ6 ) Monday.

"They're all over the lake, probably thousands and thousands," said Rome bar owner Tom Koren.

Residents near Lake Petenwell are seeing a second unusual sight - pelicans have come to scoop up the dead carp, walleye and other fish.

"We don't normally have pelicans here," resident Jim Kiehl said. "Then, I saw dead fish lying on the bank."

DNR Fish Team supervisor Justine Hasz says it's likely the pelicans are turning up because their normal staging grounds on Lake Michigan are still frozen.

The DNR expects the cold winter will result in more dead fish in lakes throughout the state. The department expects winter kill to be worst in shallower, backwater areas. Castle Rock Lake also may have been hit hard, Hasz said.

Hasz said the DNR planned to investigate the issue further on Tuesday. - Star Tribune.

WEATHER ANOMALIES: Rare Double Mirage Observed Near Frozen Hokkaido Lake - Stuns the Director of the Japan Mirage Association!

An extremely rare double mirage was observed near a frozen lake here on Feb. 14.

A double mirage is observed at the shore of Lake Furen in Nemuro, Hokkaido, on Feb. 14, 2012.
Yasushi Nagao, 55, from Nemuro, managed to capture the optical phenomenon on his camera at around 7 a.m. on St. Valentine's Day, when he noticed that a virtual image of several buildings located on the opposite shore of Lake Furen stood mirrored underneath the buildings. Furthermore, a second mirage showing pretenses of snow and ice piled upside-down underneath the real objects could be seen below the buildings.
A zoomed and trimmed version of the mirage snapshot shows the real objects above
the red lines, and their respective mirages below each of the two lines.
Mirages appearing beneath the real object are known as "inferior mirages." They occur when the air near the ground is significantly warmer than that higher up. According to experts, when light rays pass through such warm air, they bend in an upward trajectory, as if seen through lenses. "I've never heard of a double (inferior mirage)," said Takuya Ogane, the director of Japan Mirage Association, expressing his surprise at the news. - MDN.
