EXTREME WEATHER ANOMALIES: Unseasonable Warmth - Records Broken As Winter Heatwave Hits Southern California!

February 11, 2016 - CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES - Several Bay Area cities broke temperature records for the day during a mid-winter heat wave that continued Tuesday, but San Francisco came just one degree short of tying its record, forecasters said.

"Close, but no cigar," said Diana Henderson, a forecaster with the National Weather Service.

San Francisco high Tuesday was 72 degrees, compared with the record of 73 set in 2006, Henderson said.

The unseasonably warm weather started on the weekend. On Monday, San Francisco's 75-degree high beat the 2006 record for that day by a degree.

Things continued to heat up Tuesday. San Francisco International Airport tied its record of 71, also set in 2006, while the Oakland Airport one-upped its 2006 record of 69 with an even 70 degrees.

San Jose recorded a 76, two degrees over the 2006 record.

Santa Cruz blasted through the 78-degree high set in 2006 when it reached 85 Tuesday.

Salinas Municipal Airport tied its 2006 record of 81 degrees, and Gilroy tied its 2012 record of 78.

Forecasters said the Bay Area can expect slightly cooler temperatures Wednesday with highs in the 60s to lower 70s. - SF Gate.

The largest quake to hit the county had a preliminary reading of 3.5. Its epicenter was nine miles north of Morgan Hill and hit at 10:31 a.m. Sunday. A 1.6 aftershock clocked in at 11:22 a.m., emanating from the same location.  Gilroy’s closest quake was a weaker 1.1 on Saturday. This quake’s center was 10 miles east of the Garlic City and hit at 6:16 p.m.  Not to be left out of the South County quakes, San Martin saw a 1.2 shaker strike Wednesday, hitting at 7:41 p.m. It had an epicenter five miles northeast of the city.  Three quakes hit Los Altos in a matter of two days.

The first was a 1.2 on Thursday, striking at 1:14 p.m. It was followed by a stronger 1.7 at 3:17 p.m. the same day. A 1.6 on Friday at 2:16 p.m. rounded out Los Altos’ trembler trifecta. Each was three miles south of the city, about 20 minutes from Campbell.  Los Gatos had a close one with a 1.1 magnitude shaker hitting Lexington Hills Thursday. The tiny tremor struck at 9:42 a.m. three miles southeast of the small mountain community.  Hollister, just over 15 miles south of Gilroy, saw a single shaker on Friday. PLANETARY TREMORS: Seismic Swarm - Six Quakes Jostle Santa Clara County, California?!

Six earthquakes rang through Santa Clara County over the last week, with the strongest coming out of San Martin early Sunday morning.

The U.S. Geological Survey map of Santa Clara County's earthquakes over the last week.
That one registered a 2.2 on the Richter scale, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website.  The two-point tremor, which struck at 4:25 a.m., had an epicenter just eight miles northeast of Gilroy.  On May 8, a 1.2 shaker hit five miles northeast of San Martin, about nine miles northeast of Gilroy.  The closest quake to hit near Campbell, Los Gatos and Cupertino was a 1.1 tremor one mile southeast of Saratoga. That one struck May 9 at 2:29 a.m.  Los Altos also saw its fair share of tremors this week, with a 1.7 one striking May 8 just three miles south of the city.

The epicenter was four miles west of Cupertino. The next day, a 1.5 quake hit three miles south of Los Altos again.  A 1.6 rounded out Los Altos' earthquake hat trick on May 11 when it struck, once again, three miles south of the city and just three mils west of Cupertino.  Four quakes also shook up Gilroy's neighbor to the south, Hollister, in the last week.  The first, on May 6, registered a 2.8 on the Richter scale, while the second was a less-intimidating 1.2. That one went down at just before 4 p.m. on May 10 and was followed by a 1.4 shaker four hours later.  The last quake to rock Hollister struck at 7:29 a.m. the morning of May 11 and registered an even 2.0. - Gilroy Patch.

PLANETARY TREMORS: San Andreas Fault - Scientists "Haven't Figured Out" Inland Empire Quake Swarm?!

Borrego Springs is firmly anchored in the Riverside County desert. Lately, though, it's been moving around a lot.

A series of small earthquakes in the Inland Empire has UC Riverside geologist Dr. Gareth Funning struggling
to identify just what they are. Jacob Rascon reports for the NBC4 News at 6 p.m. on April 24, 2012.
"I still haven't figured out what they are," said Gareth Funning, UC Riverside geologist. "The fact that there's a persistent swarm like this, there are several major ones in that sequence." Funning has been keeping watch on roughly two weeks of quake activity and Tuesday morning's earthquake in Hemet punctuated the sequence.
"If it was followed by a large earthquake, then you would call it a fore shock," Funning said. "But right now it seems to be an isolated incident." So, does it mean anything? Funning said probably not.
"They haven't led to anything destructive but I'm sure they're a constant reminder to the people who live in the area that they live in an earthquake zone," Funning said. And it's not just any earthquake zone. The famous San Andreas Fault runs through the region, and if there is anything predictable about earthquakes, it's that you can count on shakers along the San Andreas. - NBC4.

The South County area saw three additional quakes, but none came close to topping Tuesday's 2.2 tremor, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website. A tremor registering in at 1.2 on the Richter scale hit Gilroy Saturday morning, and another quake registering at 1.2 sent ripples through the Morgan Hill area at 10:29 p.m. the night before. On Sunday, April 15, a 1.0 temblor struck 10 miles north of Morgan Hill at 10:45 a.m. The closest quake to hit near Campbell, Los Gatos and Cupertino came from Los Altos, which had a whopping 1.7 tremor hit Thursday at 4:32 p.m. A 1.4 quake struck three miles south of Los Altos and four miles west of Cupertino that same day at 9:52 a.m. On Tuesday, two quakes registering in at 1.3 hit three miles from both Los Altos and Cupertino and occurred just a few hours apart. - Campbell Patch.
Meanwhile, a magnitude-3.5 earthquake was recorded Sunday about 6 miles north-northwest of Borrego Springs.
According to automated seismographs and computers operated by the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake was recorded at 9:18 a.m. The epicenter was about 35 miles south of Palm Springs and 56 miles northeast of San Diego, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
