February 25, 2016 - SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - Sweltering day 21st consecutive day over 26C as Bureau of Meteorology predicts temperatures above 26C for the next week

Temperatures in parts of Sydney topped 40 degrees today, as the city sweated through a record streak of 21 days above 26C.

In Penrith, the temperature reached 41.7 by mid-afternoon and hovered just below into the evening.

Closer to the city it wasn't much cooler with 39.2C recorded at Sydney Olympic Park and 36.9 at the airport.

Blair Trewin of the Bureau of Meteorology told Guardian Australia the scorcher marked the 21st consecutive day of 26C or over in Sydney, a record stretch not matched at any time of year.

The next-longest streak was 19 days of temperatures above 26C in March 2014.

Trewin said the record hot spell was caused by a combination of warmer than normal ocean breezes, few major southerly winds and a lack of easterly troughs that tend to bring rain and cool temperatures. Since the streak started there has been just 9.2mm of rain in Sydney.

Sydney may continue its hot streak, with the bureau predicting temperatures above 26C for at least the next seven days. The coolest days will be on the weekend, with maximums of 27C forecast for both Saturday and Sunday.

Canberra is also feeling the heat with a maximum of 37C while Darwin and Brisbane are expecting maximums of 33C.

Trewin said: "It has been an unusually hot February in parts of the northern tropics because it's been much drier than usual for this time of year - it's normally the peak of the wet season."

The tropics were unlikely to set any records this month, though, as the hottest time of the year is usually in November/December before the wet season starts properly, he said. - The Guardian.

February 9, 2016 - NEW ZEALAND - A strong 5.7 magnitude earthquake has rocked central New Zealand.

The 1.38pm quake was 35km south-east of St Arnaud, Nelson, at a depth of 65km.

Geonet duty seismologist Anna Kaiser said the shake was felt throughout the upper South Island and lower North Island.

"It was widely felt from Taranaki to Canterbury," she said.

There were also five reports from Auckland and one from Otago.

"It was a decent shake," she said.

"With that level of shaking, it would rattle things around but we wouldn't expect major structural damage."

People have reported feeling the slow-rolling quake in the lower North Island and upper South Island. Several people in Wellington have posted about the earthquake online.

"It was pretty big. I was shaken by it," one government department worker said.

Adris Cochrane wrote: "Whoa for a sec I thought it was #auckland property prices falling, but no, actually, an earthquake in Wellington."

Emergency services say they've had no calls about the earthquake in St Arnaud.

Meanwhile, Red Cross worker Hanna Butler said everyone at the Red Cross headquarters dived under their desks.

Some users say they felt the earthquake quite strongly in Christchurch. Margery Chilton, who owns St Arnaud House Bed & Breakfast in the Nelson Lakes, said her two-storey wooden house swayed for about a minute.

"It wasn't as bad as the earthquake a few months ago but it did sway for a little bit," she said.

"Nothing fell down and there wasn't any damage.

"We've got guests that are out for a walk in the park today, though. I'll be interested to hear how they got on when they return tonight."

"Strong jolt, room shook," said another Nelson resident.

Steve Smith, who is in South Taranaki, said he felt a "long rolling sensation" for about 30 seconds.

The earthquake was felt in the Parliamentary precinct, where Prime Minister John Key remarked on it to reporters on his way into the debating chamber.

One Twitter user made a link between the quake and the first day back at Parliament.

Tectonic Summary - Seismotectonics of the Eastern Margin of the Australia Plate

The eastern margin of the Australia plate is one of the most sesimically active areas of the world due to high rates of convergence between the Australia and Pacific plates. In the region of New Zealand, the 3000 km long Australia-Pacific plate boundary extends from south of Macquarie Island to the southern Kermadec Island chain. It includes an oceanic transform (the Macquarie Ridge), two oppositely verging subduction zones (Puysegur and Hikurangi), and a transpressive continental transform, the Alpine Fault through South Island, New Zealand.

Since 1900 there have been 15 M7.5+ earthquakes recorded near New Zealand. Nine of these, and the four largest, occurred along or near the Macquarie Ridge, including the 1989 M8.2 event on the ridge itself, and the 2004 M8.1 event 200 km to the west of the plate boundary, reflecting intraplate deformation. The largest recorded earthquake in New Zealand itself was the 1931 M7.8 Hawke's Bay earthquake, which killed 256 people. The last M7.5+ earthquake along the Alpine Fault was 170 years ago; studies of the faults' strain accumulation suggest that similar events are likely to occur again.

North of New Zealand, the Australia-Pacific boundary stretches east of Tonga and Fiji to 250 km south of Samoa. For 2,200 km the trench is approximately linear, and includes two segments where old (Greater than 120 Myr) Pacific oceanic lithosphere rapidly subducts westward (Kermadec and Tonga). At the northern end of the Tonga trench, the boundary curves sharply westward and changes along a 700 km-long segment from trench-normal subduction, to oblique subduction, to a left lateral transform-like structure.

USGS plate tectonics for the region.

Australia-Pacific convergence rates increase northward from 60 mm/yr at the southern Kermadec trench to 90 mm/yr at the northern Tonga trench; however, significant back arc extension (or equivalently, slab rollback) causes the consumption rate of subducting Pacific lithosphere to be much faster. The spreading rate in the Havre trough, west of the Kermadec trench, increases northward from 8 to 20 mm/yr. The southern tip of this spreading center is propagating into the North Island of New Zealand, rifting it apart. In the southern Lau Basin, west of the Tonga trench, the spreading rate increases northward from 60 to 90 mm/yr, and in the northern Lau Basin, multiple spreading centers result in an extension rate as high as 160 mm/yr. The overall subduction velocity of the Pacific plate is the vector sum of Australia-Pacific velocity and back arc spreading velocity: thus it increases northward along the Kermadec trench from 70 to 100 mm/yr, and along the Tonga trench from 150 to 240 mm/yr.

The Kermadec-Tonga subduction zone generates many large earthquakes on the interface between the descending Pacific and overriding Australia plates, within the two plates themselves and, less frequently, near the outer rise of the Pacific plate east of the trench. Since 1900, 40 M7.5+ earthquakes have been recorded, mostly north of 30°S. However, it is unclear whether any of the few historic M8+ events that have occurred close to the plate boundary were underthrusting events on the plate interface, or were intraplate earthquakes. On September 29, 2009, one of the largest normal fault (outer rise) earthquakes ever recorded (M8.1) occurred south of Samoa, 40 km east of the Tonga trench, generating a tsunami that killed at least 180 people.

Across the North Fiji Basin and to the west of the Vanuatu Islands, the Australia plate again subducts eastwards beneath the Pacific, at the North New Hebrides trench. At the southern end of this trench, east of the Loyalty Islands, the plate boundary curves east into an oceanic transform-like structure analogous to the one north of Tonga.

Australia-Pacific convergence rates increase northward from 80 to 90 mm/yr along the North New Hebrides trench, but the Australia plate consumption rate is increased by extension in the back arc and in the North Fiji Basin. Back arc spreading occurs at a rate of 50 mm/yr along most of the subduction zone, except near ~15°S, where the D'Entrecasteaux ridge intersects the trench and causes localized compression of 50 mm/yr in the back arc. Therefore, the Australia plate subduction velocity ranges from 120 mm/yr at the southern end of the North New Hebrides trench, to 40 mm/yr at the D'Entrecasteaux ridge-trench intersection, to 170 mm/yr at the northern end of the trench.

Large earthquakes are common along the North New Hebrides trench and have mechanisms associated with subduction tectonics, though occasional strike slip earthquakes occur near the subduction of the D'Entrecasteaux ridge. Within the subduction zone 34 M7.5+ earthquakes have been recorded since 1900. On October 7, 2009, a large interplate thrust fault earthquake (M7.6) in the northern North New Hebrides subduction zone was followed 15 minutes later by an even larger interplate event (M7.8) 60 km to the north. It is likely that the first event triggered the second of the so-called earthquake "doublet".

PLAGUES & PESTILENCES: Outgassing - Mysterious "Rotten Eggs" Odor Has Homeowners Worried In Richmond, Texas?!

Aliana subdivision resident says smell of rotten eggs woke him up

January 20, 2016 - TEXAS, UNITED STATES - For many residents, owning a home in Richmond's Aliana subdivision is like owning a little slice of heaven.

"Aliana is a great community. I love living here. The residents are fantastic," Paul Keilers said.

But a mysterious odor has some homeowners in a small part of this community on edge.

"The smell is so horrid, that it will wake you from the deepest sleep," Keilers said.

Keilers said last week he was sound asleep until 2 a.m. when the smell of rotten eggs woke him up.

"Rotten eggs that have been festering in a car in the middle of Texas with the windows rolled up in the middle of summer," Keilers said.

But no one can pinpoint the source. According to the homeowners association, the neighboring Municipal Utility District was given the all clear after tests were conducted at its sewage treatment plant.

The owner of the nearby Sprint Landfill told Channel 2 he's committed to solving this mystery.

The HOA sent a letter to residents, stating Sprint is undertaking air sampling and is currently waiting for a response to an FAA permit to fly a drone. The developer is also arranging air quality testing and has been in contact with the county for assistance.

Keilers said the frequency of the smell is increasing, from once every three months to almost every other day sometimes.

"The smell is of rotten egg. So it's indicative of hydrogen sulfide. So with exposure to that even if it's long-term, short-term, what are the effects to me? What are the effects to my two 3-year-old twins? It's health concerns,"
Keilers said.

One lane of Highway 118 in Saticoy is expected to remain closed until Thursday as crews work to repair a sinkhole in the area, officials said Tuesday.

The sinkhole, about 5 feet deep and 10 feet wide, was caused by a leak from a reinforced concrete drainage pipe joint, according to Caltrans.

Caltrans officials said water inside the pipe will be removed, the break will be patched and the void will be filled with concrete slurry.

The sinkhole is on the Wells Road portion of the highway between Darling and Telephone roads, and motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

It was discovered by a Caltrans maintenance crew member about 11 a.m. Monday. - Ventura County Star.

MASS ANIMAL DIE-OFF: Shock As 150 Dead Animals Found On North Yorkshire Farm In England?!

April 26, 2013 - ENGLAND - Members of a small rural community have spoken of their shock after scores of animals were found dead or dying on a North Yorkshire farm.

About 150 sheep and lambs, three cows and three horses were found dead at a farm in West Layton, between Richmond and Barnard Castle, after a concerned member of the public contacted the RSPCA.

North Yorkshire Police and a vet went with RSPCA officers to the farm on Monday, March 28.

It is not known how the animals died, but the animal rescue charity reassured other local farmers that it was not because of disease that could be transmitted to other livestock.

A further 50 sheep and one cow had to be put down on a vet’s advice, and 16 horses and a dog were taken into the care of the RSPCA.

About 800 more sheep had been saved, with half being sold along with 20 cows, and the welfare of the rest of the flock is currently being overseen by a stockman brought in to the farm by the charity.

Leanne Plumbtree, a spokesperson for the RSPCA, said: “"The owner of the farm has been interviewed by the RSPCA with a view to bringing a private prosecution.

"No further information is available at this time."

Peter Waistell, National Farmers Union branch secretary at Barnard Castle, said although he was aware of the incident he was not in a position to comment.

Ian Walton, clerk to East and West Layton and Carkin Parish Council, said: “As a small farming community we would be horrified at any distress or suffering caused to animals.

“We would hope that the RSPCA will follow up any concerns very carefully.”

Mick Griffiths, Richmondshire District Council deputy leader and ward member for West Layton and surrounding villages, said he was shocked and had not been aware of the incident.

“This is the first I have heard about any of this but it is very upsetting to hear.”

North Yorkshire Police said although they went to assist the RSPCA on the initial visit to the farm, they do not get involved in cases of animal cruelty. - The Northern Echo.

MASS BIRD DIE-OFF: Hundreds of Dead Birds Mysteriously Fall on I-95 in Laurel?!

Hundreds of birds just dropped from the sky and landed onto I-95 Wednesday, bringing afternoon rush hour traffic to a crawl. They were common Starlings, and while there were a few in the grass and on the shoulders of the highway, the vast majority landed right on the northbound travel lanes in Laurel.

“We were just kind of curious about running them over and getting them stuck in your tires and all that nastiness,” says Tammy Johnson. “I travel this all the time and have never seen anything like that before,” says Ray Wheltle. Traffic backed up as drivers slowed down out of concern for the birds and their cars. A highway crew swept and shoveled what they could while the drivers crept by scratching their heads. State biologists say they've also seen Starlings, which tend to fly in large tight flocks, crash into the sides of tractor trailers. Some suspect something sinister. "Environmental hazards, toxins in the air and in the environment maybe," a person said.

Maryland Department of Natural Resources biologist Peter Bedel believes the Starlings flew into a truck. He does not suspect any disease and is sending samples to a lab just in case. Laurel resident Dan Kennedy said something weird happened nearby a week or two ago. "A bunch of birds flying into a parking lot and diving in thinking its water," Kennedy said. "A bunch of birds died." Some are linking the deaths to similar incidents elsewhere. "Down in Alabama or Mississippi something like that where a whole bunch of birds just died and fell out of the sky," said Richmond resident Doug Morris. One possible culprit is nearby power lines. The birds could have encountered something deadly simultaneously. But with no definitive cause named for killing the birds, some continue to worry about a hidden danger to themselves. "We're next, they're the canaries," a person said. - ABC 7.
