GEOLOGICAL UPHEAVAL: Sinkholes Keep Popping Up Across The United States - Enormous Sinkhole Opens Up On Detroit's West Side; And Another Sinkhole Opens Along California's Pacifica Coastline! [PHOTOS + VIDEO]

March 3, 2016 - UNITED STATES - The following constitutes several of the latest reports of sinkholes across the United States.

Enormous sinkhole opens on Detroit's west side

Detroit Police tell motorists to stay clear of giant opening on Tireman.

Detroit Police are advising motorists to stay clear of the eastbound lanes of Tireman on the city's west side because of a giant sinkhole.

The police department retweeted a photo from Fox 2 Detroit (WJBK) showing several officers standing near the sinkhole at the intersection with Greenfield. The officers appear to be dwarfed by the size of the opening in the pavement.

Bryan Peckinpaugh, spokesman for the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, said a sewer pipe failed underneath the street, which apparently caused the sinkhole. Officials do not know what caused the sewer pipe to fail.

"We have a team en route that will place a camera down into the sewer line to identify the cause of the break in the sewer pipe. After they make that determination, we will have an estimated repair time," Peckinpaugh said in an e-mail. "No businesses and no homes are impacted. Only the street. We have no reports of sewer backups in that area."

Peckinpaugh was not sure what time the sinkhole opened up, but officials learned of it shortly after 1 p.m.

The weather this year has been relatively mild, but two winters ago when the term "polar vortex" entered the public consciousness, the department handled more than 2,000 water main breaks.

In addition to DWSD workers, DTE Energy crews have also been at the sinkhole because it exposed some gas lines, according to DTE spokesman Scott Simons. He said no leaks have been detected, but crews are checking for them every half hour as a precaution. - Detroit Free Press.

Another sinkhole opens along , California's Pacifica coastline

The city of Pacifica is dealing with more problems along its coastline, possibly because of El Nino.

Yet another sinkhole has opened up along Beach Boulevard. A snapshot shows the depression in the sidewalk of the Beach Boulevard Promenade that was reported to the city's Department of Public Works on Saturday afternoon.

It was first thought to be 4 feet by 6 feet, but when crews opened it up, they found that the erosion underneath was much larger than that. It was 14 feet by 10 feet, and 8 feet deep, according to Van Ocampo from the public works department. The sinkhole is located right in front of the Pacifica Pier. The hole has now been filled in and patched over. This is the third sinkhole the city has had to deal with.

There were two more at Beach and Paloma that opened up within days of each other in February. And back in January, there was a breach of the seawall that had to be repaired.

And there has been other trouble too. Erosion of the cliffs caused the evacuation of an apartment building further north on Esplanade Avenue. What is behind it all is the strong waves being produced by this El Nino season, pounding the shoreline and, in the case of the sinkholes, eating away the soil underneath the promenade. Those out enjoying the view on Wednesday said they are not sure what can be done about it. "When mother nature says she wants her land back, she's going to come and get it...," said Tony Martinez, who said he enjoys fishing on the pier.

WATCH: Another sinkhole along the Pacifica coastline.

"I don't know whether it should have been built here originally or not, but clearly, it's wearing out, and if we want to be able to have our beautiful beach walk, we have to maintain it," Pacifica resident Penny Mitchell said.

The city's short-term solution is to find a contractor who can use either sonar or radar technology to try and find the weakness in the roadway before they open up. The long-term solution could involve replacing the entire seawall.

Crews don't have a timeframe for that project, and they don't know where they are going to find the money.

The price tag is estimated to be somewhere around $20 million. - KRON4.

GEOLOGICAL UPHEAVAL: Massive 20-FOOT Sinkhole Opens Up On Housing Estate In Gosforth, Newcastle, Britain - Residents Left Horrified; "Rumbling Sound" Heard At The Site!

November 13, 2015 - BRITAIN
- Residents have been left horrified after a 20ft sinkhole suddenly opened up on a housing estate built over an abandoned colliery.

The huge crater appeared above old mine workings at Craster Square in the Coxlodge area of Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne, just before 11am today.

Dramatic pictures show the sheer size of the deep hole, which stretches the width of the road, and how it has left one lone car stranded on a driveway.

The huge 20ft sinkhole appeared on a residential street, in front of a set of garages (pictured), above an abandoned colliery at Craster Square in the Gosforth area of Newcastle upon Tyne just before 11am today. No one was injured but the site has now been cordoned off.

No one was injured when the 20ft crater (pictured) suddenly appeared, although police and officials remain at the site this afternoon.

The sinkhole was reported to the police by a resident called Doreen, who said she was sorting out her garage when she heard 'rumbling'.

The massive hole appeared on the site of an old shaft connected to former mine workings that belong to the National Coal Board (NCB).

No one was injured when the hole became visible, despite it reaching from the edge of one property's drive to another.

Police officers have now cordoned off the area and officials have been assessing the scene.

A police spokesman has said: 'We were called to a report of a sinkhole that had appeared.

'Officers attended and placed a cordon around the area. Nobody has been injured and police remain at the scene to assist making the area safe.'

The sinkhole was reported to the police by 58-year-old resident Doreen Murphy, who has lived in the square for 17 years and who was sorting out her garage when she heard a 'rumbling sound'.

She said: 'It was at the same time that the bin men were coming around so I thought it was them. But then the sound kept getting louder and louder and there was a big crash. 'I looked out of my garage and there was a big hole there. At first I was worried I couldn't get out. I was in shock and didn't know what to do so I phoned the police and told them what had happened.'

Another resident, Kyle Common, 26, said: 'It is just so strange to think that this could happen so close to where we live. Someone could have been driving there or had a car parked there. It was quite a shock.'

John Smith, who has lived in the area for 15 years, said his garage has been cordoned off as it is so close to the sinkhole. He said: 'At around 11.30am this morning the police knocked on my door and asked me about my garage and then they informed me that a big sinkhole had appeared in the ground. 'It happened very suddenly, I didn't actually hear any rumbles or noise. I don't have access to my garage but my car is out in the front . 'We have always known that there were pit yards here and there was a cobbled dome, which is like cap on top of a pit shaft, exactly where the sinkhole is.'

Another neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said they had moved their car just in the nick of time. They added: 'This morning when I took when car out of my garage there was a slight four inch dip in the ground. 'I returned about 90 minutes later and saw that the ground had sunken in. There was a mineshaft in this area and that is probably what has caused this.'

Resident Leah O'Malley, 20, said: 'When I came out of my flat this morning, the ground was fine but there was a lady here who was worried about the state of the ground. 'I went back inside and came back out later to find that the huge hole had appeared. I was absolutely shocked.

COXLODGE COLLIERY HISTORY

The sinkhole in Gosforth has appeared above one of the former sites of Coxlodge Colliery.

There were two main pits in the colliery, one which was situated on Jubilee Road - just off Crasters Crescent where today's huge crater has appeared.

Official documents show that the exact location of today's sinkhole is above the entrance shaft of the former mine.

The Jubilee Pit, so called in commemoration of the jubilee attaining the 50th year of on George III's reign, is 68 fathoms deep.

Meanwhile, the second pit owned by Coxlodge - the Regent Pit - situated elsewhere in the city, is 92 fathoms deep.

An explosion occurred at the Gosforth mine on July 9, 1821, in which one man lost his life.

'A fire engine and police officers turned up and this lady was shaking. She said she was worried about falling into the sinkhole and it was a shock to find the ground collapsed.

'We are all wondering why this has happened.'

Meanwhile, resident Kirsty Mensah, 39, a customer service worker, said she was 'very concerned' about how the sinkhole had occurred. She said: 'It is a weak spot in the mine workings so there needs to be lots of tests to make sure other areas are safe. It could have been a block of flats or some kids riding their bikes or playing. 'There needs to be the right procedures and tests to reassure the public that this won't happen again.'

The geology of the area does have former coal mining present. It is the ancient working methods which may leave roads susceptible to sinkhole formation.

Sinkholes are the result of a collapse of the surface material into a void underground.

In the 19th century, when Coxlodge Colliery was in operation, the Jubilee Pit was on Jubilee Road opposite Jubilee Crescent in Gosforth.

A spokesman from Newcastle City Council said: 'We are aware that a 20-30ft hole has appeared near Craster Square in Coxlodge, Gosforth.

'We understand that this an old shaft connected to former mine workings that belong to the National Coal Board (NCB).

'Northumbria Police and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service are both in attendance, as well as the council's Technical and Structural Engineering Teams who are providing assistance to emergency services.

'NCB have been contacted and their Emergency Response Team is attending the scene.'

However, John Delaney, from the Coal Authority, said he had not seen a sinkhole this big for some time.

He said: 'They will conduct the necessary investigation to establish if it is coal mining related and, if they do, make good the damage.

'We will be looking at old maps of the former coal mines in the area to see which one might be responsible.' - Daily Mail.

GEOLOGICAL UPHEAVAL: Sinkholes Keep Popping Up Across The United States - Massive 375-Feet Long By 30-Feet Deep Sinkhole Opens Up In Meridian, Mississippi; Swallows Up 12 Cars! [PHOTOS+VIDEO]

November 10, 2015 - MISSISSIPPI, UNITED STATES
- A large "sinkhole" opened in a new IHOP restaurant parking lot in Meridian, Mississippi, over the weekend, swallowing as many as 12 cars, according to CNN affiliate WTOK.

The asphalt gave way Saturday evening, leaving a huge hole estimated to be about 35-feet wide, 375-feet long and 30-feet deep, authorities said.

Emergency officials roped off the area to keep people away, WTOK reported. There were no reports of injuries.

Mayor Percy Bland said the cave-in appears to be over the site of a former city culvert, according to WTOK. Crews will begin trying to remove some of the cars Monday, the mayor added.

While the event was first blamed on a sinkhole, Dr. Greg Easson of the University of Mississippi's Geology and Geological Engineering Department said that's not accurate.

Easson told CNN sinkholes are the result of a natural process involving the erosion of limestone bedrock due to underground water movement, but what occurred in Meridian was the collapse of a culvert or underwater drain due to the new construction in the area.

Craig Hoffman, a spokesman for International House of Pancakes, told CNN the company is happy no one got hurt.

GEOLOGICAL UPHEAVAL: New Giant Sinkhole Opens Up In Russia's Perm Region!

Sinkholes are caused by collapses of the surface layer under the ground.  Brian Stansberry/Wikicommons

May 22, 2015 - PERM REGION, RUSSIA
- Another giant sinkhole has appeared in Russia's Perm region, which has seen its soil imploding into a series of large craters in recent years, possibly as a result of the vast network of mines in the area.

The latest sinkhole appeared in the village of Lunyevka, in the Aleksandrovsk district of the Perm region. The town had been a coal mining center, but the last mine was closed there more than 50 years ago the head of the district administration, Lyubov Babich, was quoted as saying by the local Valekse news portal on Monday.

Accounts of the sinkhole size varied. The head of the Aleksandrovsk district civil defense department, Alexander Golchikov, put it at 20 meters in diameter and 10 meters deep, the regional outlet of the national Argumenty i Fakty newspaper reported. Meanwhile, Babich estimated the size at 25 meters in diameter and 4 meters deep, Valekse reported.

"Part of a potato patch and several trees have gone underground," a community group of Aleksandrovsk residents wrote on Russia's VKontakte social network.

The new sinkhole follows an even larger one that appeared in the Perm region town of Solikamsk last fall after an inflow of water during a mining accident at the Solikamsk-2 mine. Uralkali, the world's largest potash company, which owns the mine, suspended operations there as emergency services struggled to contain the expansion of the crater.

The diameter of the hole is 25 metres. © AIF

A series of similar incidents over the past few years also occurred in mines around Berezniki.

The most serious one took place in 2006, when Uralkali was forced to close the Berezniki-1 mine after it was flooded with brine inflow.

A number of other sinkholes in Berezniki followed, including one in the middle of the town this February, according to media reports. That sinkhole ripped through the ground near a local school that had been shut down and "quarantined" in 2007 following previous incidents, the GorodBerezniki news portal reported.

The causes of the latest sinkhole in Lunyevka remained unclear.

The crater could have "appeared on the location of a hole that has been here always," regional mining institute director Alexander Baryakh was quoted by Valekse news portal as saying, adding that it has not yet been determined what caused the original hole.

The sinkhole may or may not have been caused by abandoned mines that had operated in the district between 1857 and 1953, the head of the Aleksandrovsk administration's environment and natural resources department, Yuri Letov, was quoted as saying.

No detailed engineering schemes of the mines were available, and little was known about which areas may have become flooded after the mines were abandoned, he said, Valekse reported. - The Moscow Times.

GEOLOGICAL UPHEAVAL: Sinkholes Keep Popping Up Across The United States - Sinkhole Closes Street In Traverse City, Michigan!

Elmwood Ave closed due to sinkhole

May 19, 2015 - MICHIGAN, UNITED STATES
- Motorists who drive up and down Elmwood Avenue will need to find a new way to get where they're going while a large sinkhole blocks their route.

The roughly four-foot deep sinkhole broke up the roadway just south of Medical Campus Drive at about 1:30 p.m, said Dave Green, Traverse City's director of public services.

A plywood board covered the hole Monday afternoon, supporting a traffic barrier and surrounded by orange cones and yellow caution tape. Elmwood Avenue was closed to through traffic between Seventh and Eleventh streets as work crews marked utility infrastructure locations for future repair work.

Crews plan to begin fixing the the sinkhole first thing Tuesday morning.

"We've got the road closed now and plan to attack it first thing in the morning," Green said.

Crews likely will keep the road closed for two days as they work to repair the hole, Green said. Limited lane closures likely will follow as crews repave the street.

Green said the exact cause of the sinkhole remained unclear late Monday, but he said an old 15-inch clay tile running under the road south of Medical Campus Drive appeared to have collapsed. A stream also runs under the road through a culvert near where the hole opened.

Green said he did not believe the sinkhole injured anyone or damaged any vehicles.

"Luckily nobody got injured," Green said. "That stuff on that side of town is old." - Traverse City Record-Eagle.

May 19, 2015 - COLOMBIA
- A massive landslide tore through a ravine in northwest Colombia Monday before dawn, killing at least 62 people and injuring 40, authorities said.

Most residents were sleeping when the landslide hit the municipality of Salgar around 3:00 am, burying a large area in mud and debris.

The rush of mud and water "tore down everything in its path," Salgar Mayor Olga Osorio told RCN Radio.

The small town of Santa Margarita was practically "wiped off the map," she said.

The country's disaster management agency reported an increased death toll early Tuesday morning and said a handful of government organizations were involved in rescue and aid efforts that included debris removal and erecting temporary shelters.

The rescue operation, which was being carried out by some 377 first responders, was suspended overnight Monday and will resume again early in the morning.

Aerial images showed a broad river of mud that had inundated a large area, dragging houses and trees along with it.

Residents shoveled out piles of mud in the afternoon, trying to salvage what belongings they could, as dump trucks arrived to begin hauling away the mess.

Photos from the agency showed crews in yellow hats clearing washed-out and damaged roads with shovels.

President Juan Manuel Santos flew over the affected area and met with local officials.

"No one can bring the deceased back to you, that is something we deeply regret. But we have to get through this disaster and look to the future with bravery and strength," he said.

Several children were orphaned and are being cared for by the Colombian Institute for Family Wellbeing, he said.

He announced that each family affected -- 30 in all -- would receive $7,000, and promised infrastructure improvements to try to prevent such disasters in the future.

Ex-president turned opposition leader Alvaro Uribe also visited the area, which is near where he grew up.

The ground gave way at the intersection of Poplar Boulevard and Kenwood Place Friday.

Carey Armstrong tells us she saw the pavement dipping when she drove over it on her way to the grocery store, and 15 minutes later she returned and saw the gaping hole.

That's when she notified the city.

A creek runs beneath the hole and residents who ventured over to take a look say it's about 10 feet deep.

Andy and Amy Forbes and their family were taking a walk in the area Sunday but learned about the sinkhole while driving through Friday.

"Honestly it makes me a little bit nervous driving around I find myself planning how do I get out of the car if it goes in a hole and that kind of thing, got a sunroof happily," said Andy Forbes.

"At this point we've been a little cynical and we joke with the children about 'ok what's the safest route out of our neighborhood and the way to school today where we might not fall into a hole'," said Amy Forbes.

GEOLOGICAL UPHEAVAL: Sinkholes Keep Popping Up Across The United States - Sinkhole Swallows Car In Liberty, Missouri!

May 8, 2015 - TEXAS, UNITED STATES
- A vehicle sank into a hole created by a burst water pipe under a hydrant in Liberty on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said the water pipe broke after a vehicle involved in a crash hit the fire hydrant at South Withers and South Wales before 5 p.m. Wednesday, releasing about 7,000 gallons of water and eroding the street.

It appeared the silver sedan sunk several feet into the ground.

Liberty North High School senior Austin Oard said he swerved to avoid hitting another car and crashed into the hydrant. He said he and his 15-year-old sister got out of the car before the hole opened up.

"Instantly, yeah. You couldn't see the street because there was so much water covering it," Oard said.

While they weren't hurt, the car got the worst of it.

"My first car. It's my baby, and it's completely totaled," Oard said.

The crash and the recovery effort drew the attention of fans watching a soccer game at nearby Liberty Middle School.

Homes in the area were without water and power for a short time, drawing more people out to see the city crews working at the scene. Neighbors said it's the biggest thing to happen at the intersection in 20 years.

Firefighters said the hydrant won't be fully repaired until Thursday at the earliest, but they're not concerned because two other hydrants are nearby. - KMBC News.

May 6, 2015 - PENNSYLVANIA, UNITED STATES
- A sinkhole that developed Tuesday evening forced the Allentown Streets Department to close the 200 block of North 30th Street, city police said.

The sinkhole was discovered when a pedestrian noticed a narrow, 3-foot-long crack in the pavement, about 3 to 4 feet deep.

Police said that, just below the pavement, the sinkhole affected an area as wide as 15 feet.

Police Capt. Bill Reinik said the middle of the block was barricaded shut, but residents still can reach their homes. He said the sinkhole probably can be repaired with relatively little bother.

"It's a pretty quiet street, not much traffic, so we don't expect many issues," Reinik said.

The problem was reported about 6:45 p.m., he said. The Streets Department, the Lehigh County Water Authority and UGI were sent to check it out.

Less than 2 hours later, a city streets crew on the scene said the water was running properly, there was no trouble with the gas line, and the sinkhole itself would be repaired Wednesday morning.

GEOLOGICAL UPHEAVALS: Severe Rainfall Causes Massive Sinkhole In West Sydney, Australia - Threatens Apartment Blocks!

© Gordon McComskie

May 3, 2015 - SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
- Dozens of residents have spent the night away from their homes after fears of a building collapse in Sydney's west.

About 60 people were evacuated from three apartment blocks in Harris Park on Saturday evening after heavy rain damaged a nearby construction site at Parkes Street.

NSW SES media spokesman Todd Burns said the walls of a construction pit had started to crumble after being softened by rain.

Amid concerns the apartment buildings either side might give way, residents spent the night with family and friends and had not been allowed to return on Sunday morning.

Police said initial inquiries indicated that severe weather conditions had caused "excessive soil erosion and affected the structural integrity of the site".

It is not known when the buildings will be deemed safe as investigations involving the site developer, engineers, geologists and gas and electrical companies continue.

The job was one of more than 1000 the SES had responded to since 7pm on Thursday as wild weather hit Queensland and New South Wales, fatally sweeping three cars off the road north of Brisbane and killing a six-year-old boy at South Ballina.

More than 200 calls for help were made to the SES overnight, with Manly particularly hard hit in the Sydney metropolitan area.

Mr Burns said there were 11 flood rescues overnight mostly occurring in the Coffs Harbour region.

"We've still got people trying to drive through flood waters and getting stuck. It's crazy people are dying by doing this and people still keep trying," he said.

The weather was expected to ease on Sunday and clear moving into the week, with tops of 28 degrees for flood-affected areas in the north, a meteorologist for Fairfax Media-owned Weatherzone said. - Sydney Morning Herald.

GEOLOGICAL UPHEAVAL: Sinkholes Keep Popping Up Across The United States - Sinkhole Big Enough To Swallow A Car Opens Up In Oxford, Mississippi!

© via Twitter

May 1, 2015 - MISSISSIPPI, UNITED STATES
- A sinkhole big enough to swallow a car has developed on a busy section of Mississippi Highway 6 in Oxford.

Fortunately, people spotted the hazard and authorities re-routed traffic before anybody drove into it.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports the problem started Wednesday morning in an eastbound lane.

The hole was between the exit for Jackson Avenue and one for Chucky Mullins Drive, leading to the University of Mississippi campus.

City Engineer Bart Robinson says he first feared a water main had broken.

But the culprit appeared to be a culvert buried 31 feet below the highway, which had separated and caused erosion.

Mississippi Department of Transportation crews were working to fix the problem.

It was not immediately clear how long the repair would take. - The Clarion Ledger.
