Magnitude 5.9 earthquake rocks South Georgia

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake recently struck north of South Georgia on Tuesday (April 19, 2016), as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) earthquake bulletin.

The earthquake's epicenter was recorded at 119 kilometers north of Visokoi Island, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands at 1:25 pm of Tuesday (Philippine time).

A slight tremor has also affected nearby areas such as areas of Argentina - Ushuaia, Rio Gallegos, Puerto Deseado - and Stanley in Falkland Islands.

No casualties were reported as of this posting.


Magnitude 5.9 earthquake rattles Isangel, Vanuatu

An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 has struck near the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu, the US Geological Survey (USGS) says.

The earthquake struck 19km west-south-west of  Isangel, Vanuatu, at 13:06:09 (UTC) at a depth of 65.8 km (40.9 miles), the USGS said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre did not issue a Pacific-wide tsunami warning.

"Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected," the centre said. 




Magnitude 5.6 earthquake strikes near Illapel in Chile

A moderate earthquake with magnitude 5.6  was reported 9 kilometers (6 miles) from Illapel in Chile on Monday.

A tsunami warning has not been issued (Does not indicate if a tsunami actually did or will exist).

The temblor occurred at a depth of 39.42 km (24 miles) below the earth’s surface.

Epicenter of the event was 82 km (51 miles) from La Ligua.

SOCIETAL COLLAPSE: Taliban Resurgence - At Least 28 Killed, 327 Injured In Kabul Suicide Blast! [PHOTOS + VIDEOS]

April 19, 2016 - KABUL, AFGHANISTAN - A huge explosion has rocked Kabul close to the US embassy, and several Afghan government ministries and security agencies. At least 28 people have been killed in the attack, AFP cited local police chief, while the Health Ministry confirmed 327 injured.

Reports of the number of injured vary. According to Pajhwok Afghan News, at least 100 people were wounded in the attack. Tolo news cited officials from Afghan Health Ministry who confirmed that some 198 people were injured in the Kabul suicide bombing.

The casualties are expected to rise, Health Ministry spokesman Ismail Kawosi told Reuters, adding that civilians and Afghan security soldiers were among those killed and injured in the attack.


















"Today's terrorist attack near the Puli Mahmood Khan area of Kabul City shows the clear defeat of the enemy in the face-to-face fight against Afghan security forces," the Afghan presidential palace said in a statement on Twitter.

At least eight Afghan soldiers suffered minor injuries in the blast, a spokesman for an emergency hospital in Kabul said, Reuters reported.

Ghani slammed the attack “in the strongest possible terms,” adding that the offices of Afghanistan's main security agency were the target.

Photos have emerged showing plumes of smoke rising over the city center. According to Afghan Tolo news, a suicide bomber detonated explosive-laden vehicle outside Afghan Secret Service unit. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the suicide attack, Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the militant group said, as cited by AP.

A separate statement on the Taliban’s website said that a suicide car bomber blew himself up in front of the office of National Directorate of Security, Reuters reported. The group claimed that Taliban fighters, including more suicide bombers, had entered the compound.

The blast took place in Wazir Akbar Khan neighborhood, one of the most affluent districts in the Afghan capital, a few hundred meters from the presidential palace, known as Arg. Also major Afghan security agencies, including the headquarters of the International Security Assistance Force and the Defense Ministry, are located in the area.

Eyewitnesses told the news agency they heard gunfire over half an hour after the explosion. The gunfire was also confirmed by police.

The US embassy and NATO headquarters said they were not affected by the blast.The explosion took place a week after the Taliban announced its spring offensive, pledging to launch operations against government strongholds and guerrilla attacks to drive Afghanistan's government from power. Dubbed “Operation Omari” – after the late Taliban founder Mullah Mohammad Omar – the offensive will also include assassinations, the Islamist group said in a statement. - RT.






INFRASTRUCTURE COLLAPSE: Bus Crashes Into A Gorge In Odisha, India - 30 People Killed; 8 Others Injured!

At least 30 people were killed and eight injured when a bus carrying over 40 artistes of an opera team fell down a 300-feet gorge in Odisha's Deogarh district.

April 19, 2016 - ODISHA, INDIA - At least 30 people were killed and eight injured when a bus carrying over 40 artistes of an opera team fell down a 300-feet gorge in Odisha's Deogarh district on Sunday evening, officials said.

Fire services DG Binay Behera said 27 bodies had been recovered from the spot during the rescue operations while three people died while being rushed to the district headquarters hospital.

The bus of the Bharati Gananatya opera party was returning to Remta in Bargarh district from Deogarh while fell into the gorge off the Tilaebani Gaelo ghat, Deogarh Superintendent of Police Sarah Sharma told media persons.

Rescue operations have been intensified with the help of fire officials, Odisha Disaster Response Force (ODRAF), police personnel and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers, she informed.

Senior police and administrative officials were present at the spot to supervise the operations, Sharma said.

Director General of Police K.B. Singh told the media that eight critically injured people have been admitted in district hospital. He said rescue operations were on to find out more people trapped inside the bus.

The victims are yet to be identified. The district administration has issued two helpline numbers.

Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik expressed grief over the incident and directed officials to speed up rescue operation. - NDTV.




GLOBAL VOLCANISM: Mexico's Popocatepetl Volcano Erupts - Sending Ash Almost Two Miles Into The Sky! [VIDEOS]

April 19, 2016 - MEXICO - The Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico erupted overnight, sending lava flying as far as a mile away from the mountain.

The Puebla airport, directly east of the volcano, has been closed and officials are urging residents to wear masks and avoid inhaling ash covering the city.

There are approximately 25 million people who live within 62 miles, or 100 kilometers, of the active volcano.

The eruption of the 17,797-foot stratovolcano, the second highest peak in Mexico, began around 2:30AM, sending ash almost two miles into the sky.

Popocatépetl is the most active volcano in the country, with documented eruptions dating back to the arrival of the Spanish in 1519.

It has been active since 1991, after being dormant for approximately half a century.

Since 1993, smoke has constantly billowed from the crater.

The most recent eruption was April 3, just 15 days ago.

The name Popocatépetl is derived from the Nahuatl words popōca 'it smokes' and tepētl meaning 'mountain,' translating to Smoking Mountain.

Among locals, it is commonly referred to as El Popo. - Sputnik.
